Job Description:

HISTORY

LifePoint is one of the fastest growing churches in the tri-state area and have increased by an average of 60 people per year for the last 4 years. As a new church plant founded in September 2007, LifePoint has grown to approximately 275 in weekly attendance. 80% of people who have been at the church for more than 6 months are involved in some sort of volunteer service (on campus – off campus – mercy – mission – etc.).

Clearly, LifePoint is a church full of engaged and passionate followers of Jesus! With a mission is to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ, LifePoint’s theological position is to glorify God through the fulfillment of the Great Commission (Matt. 28:19-20) in the spirit of the Great Commandment (Matt. 22:37-39). God is glorified as new disciples of Jesus Christ are made, and as these disciples grow in love for God and neighbor.

The discipleship model at LifePoint is encapsulated in the words “ENCOUNTER – PURSUE – CONNECT – GO.” There is also a growing love of global missions work at LifePoint, including substantial partnerships with missionaries and churches in India and Guatemala. They are deeply involved with a school for children in Kolkata, India, and adoption is a growing passion for LifePoint, including the Lead Pastor’s family adopting from Ethiopia.

Financially, LifePoint is 100% debt free, they own their facility, and they have a healthy financial reserve. With a very conservative budget forecast, each year they have exceeded expectations. There is a very healthy capital campaign underway for a move to a new facility (to accommodate the level of growth). 10% of the capital campaign funds go to fund capital needs on the global mission field.

CURRENT STATUS OF OVERALL CHURCH

The LifePoint congregation is fairly affluent (compared to the region) with a high concentration of medical, business, and small business owners. They also have a population of those in material and financial need and work closely with the local soup kitchen ministry (www.horizonsocialservices.com) which partners with the Anglican Church. It is also this ministry that Lead Pastor Bill started and was working with prior to being called to LifePoint full-time. There is a disproportionate number of families. The majority of the congregation is between the ages of 25 and 45, so having space for a growing children’s and student ministry is critical for the future health of LifePoint.

Within the youth ministry, they have been lead by a full-time volunteer, Chris Woodard. Chris one of the founding families of LifePoint, ordained at LifePoint, currently an elder, and moving into a new role within the church. He is really excited to be the new pastor’s #1 cheerleader and support, as needed. 30% of LifePoint attendees are Millennials and growth is inevitable. The youth ministry current meets during first service on Sunday morning with a few key events throughout the year. Currently there are about 10 volunteers who teach, lead small groups, and provide support to the ministry. They are all on board with the changes and eager for the future of youth ministry.

LOCATION / DEMOGRAPHIC

Quincy is a river city known as the “Gem City of Illinois” and in 2010 was listed as #8 in the top 15 small U.S. cities to raise a family in (Forbes). The area is very culturally alive having its own civic center, symphony orchestra, community theatre, and city architectural tour and is known for having the largest park-district for a city of its size in the USA, resulting in a vast array of public parks, basketball courts, and soccer fields. Holding approximately 45K people, Quincy serves as the business, medical, government, and entertainment center for the tri-state region of approximately 250K people. The primary economic driver is agriculture and agriculture related fields followed by Blessing Hospital, John Wood Community College, and Quincy Public Schools. The Kroc Center is also a great benefit to the community. Quincy is less than a 2-hour drive to St. Louis, MO and Springfield, IL, and a 4-hour drive to Chicago. With its own regional airport, daily Amtrak to Chicago, and other travel options, Quincy is an easy place to have some fun local adventures.

CURRENT STATUS OF STUDENT MINISTRIES

Crossings Student Ministries has reached a crossroads where the leadership of the church has decided to invest in the future of the ministry – with this comes leadership and vision from the Student Ministries Lead Pastor, which allows this position of Student Ministry Pastor to thrive.

The Student Ministries team consists of five full-time pastors, one as a lead, two for middle school (7th & 8th grades), two for high school (traditionally one for guys and one for girls in each), plus one full-time and one part-time administrative assistant. The current staff is talented and experienced, but they also have a willingness and openness to learning. Over the past six months, the team has visited several other similarly sized and larger churches to experience and learn about their approach to
student ministry.

One of the unique things about Crossings and their student ministry is that it is not only strongly supported by the leadership and church as a whole but it is also empowered to grow.

MINISTRY APPROACH

LifePoint is a non-denominational, Gospel-centered church whose approach that’s both deep and wide. They would affirm creedal theology. Their philosophy would be to lead with theological essentials and remain open on theological distinctions. As a church, they follow a Simple Church philosophy. There have been 18 baptisms in the past 6 months. LifeGroups are a key component to the ministry of LifePoint. Around 65% of attendees participate, including student ministries. LifePoint believes discipleship occurs best through relationship. For example, LifeGroups adopt a “go” group and follow a hybrid model of centralized and decentralized curriculum.

CHALLENGE AND OPPORTUNITY

Much of LifePoint needs to move to the next level. Their website, worship experience, leadership paradigm, and discipleship strategy is all positioned to change and improve. Space has also been a significant issue for growth, so moving into the community college space will resolve that challenge. LifePoint anticipates adding 100 people within the first 6 months of moving into their new space.

LifePoint is a great church and growing exponentially. It’s highly regarded in the community and has leadership that connects and communicates well with the congregation and is an influential voice in the wider church community. It is “on the map” and partners with the city in ways that lead to improvement. LifePoint’s new Student Ministries Pastor needs to be a self-starter because they will be given a voice and a place at the table in the midst of the growth. This new leader will need to get to know the culture then speak into decisions, especially as it relates to student ministry. He will need to “grab the baton and run” with volunteers, parents, and students. He needs to be highly relational with speaking capabilities. Education and/or training will be helpful in this role. This leader will be given a great opportunity to take the solid foundation that’s been laid down and build upon the culture to reach the broader community. Regarding the school system, Quincy has one junior high and one high school in the city. Perhaps the greatest development for the school system is a "Build for Quincy" referendum that passed in the Fall 2014 elections. The referendum approved $90 million for 5 new elementary schools, plus additions on the high school. A leader who is driven, creative, thick-skinned, and committed to caring for his people as much as leading them will do well for this season of LifePoint’s life.
