Chaplain for the Employees

The Shell Point Retirement Community

Fort Myers, FL

The Shell Point Retirement Community (SPRC: www.shellpoint.org) is a faith-based continuous care retirement community (CCRC) under the authority of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Foundation. It is the largest CCRC in Florida and one of the largest in the United States, with over 2,300 residents and 1,000 employees. The Chaplain for the Employees provides spiritual care for the employees and their families. The chaplaincy is a ministry of The Village Church at Shell Point and the Employee Chaplain serves on the church staff with a primary ministry focus on Shell Point employees.  Often employee contacts flow from emotional, physical or relational needs. The task of the Chaplain is to address the immediate need and discern underlying causes while forming a relationship with the employee and providing spiritual care.

Minimum requirements are ten years of pastoral and/or chaplaincy experience and full commitment to historic, orthodox, biblical Christianity. Desirable qualities include chaplaincy experience in workplace, industrial, or military settings, and clinical membership in the ACPE or another comparable organization.

Ministry Context

The Village Church (TVC) is a congregation located in the Shell Point Retirement Community, Fort Myers, FL. SPRC is owned by the Christian & Missionary Alliance, a theologically conservative protestant denomination, although residents and employees have religious backgrounds in more than 25 Christian denominations, several other religions, and no religion. The Village Church is a Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, although its membership and leadership represent the diversity of Christian denominations in the community. TVC is a separate corporation from SPRC with its own board, ministry vision and mission, though the 1,000 seat church worship center is a multi-use facility which it shares with SPRC.

The Village Church is a vibrant senior community with attendance ranging from 500-600 in the winter season to 300-350 in the summer. It is estimated that another 20% watch the services on Shell Point Television in the assisted living and skill nursing facilities, or in their own residences. Staff includes a Senior Pastor, a Minister of Worship and Music, a full-time Associate Pastor, a Director of Church Operations, a Media Production Manager, two part-time Assistant Pastors, a Director of Spiritual Services (chaplain for the health care facilities), and the Employee Chaplain. The ministry emphasizes strong expository preaching, excellence in music, extensive small group Bible study fellowships, outreach into the SPRC, service in the greater Fort Myers community, and a strong emphasis on international ministries. The operating budget of TVC exceeds $1,000,000, with an additional $500,000 given to missions annually.
