Purpose: The Coordinator of Student Ministry will provide dynamic leadership that adapts, interprets implements, develops, and grows the mission of First United Methodist Church among students in grades 6-12 and their families.


Essential Functions:

        Create and communicate a dynamic vision for student ministry in alignment with the mission, vision, and values of the larger congregation.

        In consultation with the Director of Spiritual Development and Family Ministry, implement and lead a comprehensive student ministry that is biblically sound, demonstrates theological integrity within the Wesleyan tradition, is developmentally appropriate, engages a diversity of learning styles, is facilitated by a team of trained Student Ministry volunteer leaders, and encourages partnership between the church and families of the students.

        Develop, in consultation with the Director of Spiritual Development and Family Ministry,  a network of spiritually gifted and appropriately equipped members of First United Methodist Church, both men and women, to serve as the Student Ministry Leadership Team.

        Collaborate with the Director of Spiritual Development and Family Ministry in the selection of various curricula and other learning resources for Student Ministry settings in cooperation with the Student Ministry Leadership Team. 

        Collaborate with Director of Young Adult Ministries in addressing needs for students in grades 6-12 as well as post-high school young adults in worship, spiritual growth, connection to the faith community of First Church, and opportunities to serve.

        Ensure that an accurate Student Ministry database and robust web presence is maintained on behalf of the congregation and its families.

        In cooperation with the Coordinator of Communications, develop and implement a social media strategy for engaging and cultivating the student ministry community of First United Methodist Church.  

        In collaboration with the Outreach Ministries Team of First United Methodist Church, develop several opportunities each year for students to be personally involved in mission experiences of varying levels of time commitment, intensity, social location, and cost.

        Collaborate with other program ministries of the congregation to strengthen the overall mission of First United Methodist Church.

        Take responsibility to design and create celebrations of Student Ministry throughout the year.

        Develop a system for evaluating the performance of Student Ministry volunteers as part of an ongoing effort to continuously improve the quality of Children's Ministry.

         Annually participate in the development of the Student Ministry Program Budget and manage the approved Student Ministries budget, including Student Ministry-related fundraising efforts, throughout the year.

         Ensure compliance with Safe Sanctuary policies to reduce the risk of abuse


Other Responsibilities:

        Primary public spokesperson for Student Ministry of First United Methodist Church

        Participate in staff meetings, meetings of the Student Ministry Leadership Team, and the monthly meeting of the Leadership Council as requested

        Network within the community and with other churches on issues of shared interest



Minimum Qualifications:

        Bachelor's degree in Education or Religious Studies (or equivalent)

        Master's Level education in Student/Youth or Children and Family Ministries or equivalent a strong plus.

        Proven record of effectiveness in designing, developing, implementing, and leading Student Ministry within a team context.


Activities to fulfill responsibilities:

  1. Weekly youth group meetings for Middle School Youth and High School Youth (two separate experiences).
  2. Participation in developing teams to lead Sunday School and/or small groups for students in grades 6-12.
  3. Coaching of adult volunteers who are part of the Student Ministries Leadership Team
  4. Weekly coordinating meeting with Director of Spiritual Development and Family Ministry
  5. Planning and, in some cases, participating in short-term mission trips/opportunities for students in grades 6-12
