At Mars Hill we believe that every person should be supported in their quest to become fully formed followers of Jesus. We seek to help them discover their Identity, Belonging and Mission through the formational support of our faith community.  The Community Life Groups Pastor exists to help adults cultivate authentic community in and through Mars Hill or order to lead, them to deeper levels of connection and discipleship.  This is accomplished through clear and compelling group opportunities that harmonize with Mars Hill’s foundational values, mission and vision.

Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a ministry or human services related field preferred
  • Minimum of 5 years of pastoral experience
  • Willingness to continually and creatively pursue dynamically changing sociological, developmental, and theological issues
  • Knowledge of and exposure to a broad range of pastoral care ministries and experiences
  • Knowledge and understanding of small group dynamics and the professional/theological conversations surrounding small group ministry






  • A worldview that is aligned with the vision, mission, directions, and narrative theology of Mars Hill
  • Able to synthesize and think critically about theological, developmental, and sociological issues associated with the church and all stages of life
  • Able to understand, appreciate, and implement collaborative transitions with MH Kids, MH Students, and Community Life ministries
  • Committed to the priority and role of the local church



  • Demonstrates a deep love and commitment to Christ; commitment to personal spiritual growth, formation and discipleship
  • Proven ability to lead, modeling a way of life (philosophies and conduct) that inspires others to follow

Lead the development and growth of a proactive small groups ministry at Mars Hill, that fosters connections, encourages involvement and prioritizes spiritual growth

  • Serve as the “resident expert” on belonging and all group experiences at Mars Hill
  • Develop an annual plan that ensures continuous improvement and increased small group involvement
  • Create, execute, and manage a variety of groups to foster belonging, involvement and spiritual growth (small groups, groups + classes, common interest groups, care groups, etc.)
  • Cultivate a strong, active and engaged small group community (leaders, volunteers, group members and individuals), cultivating a culture of peer to peer care, servant leadership and missional living
  • Function as the lead of all small groups, develop, coach, teach and encourage small group leaders  so they can be successful in their leadership roles and responsibilities
  • Develop clear pathways for individuals to discover belonging through group participation
  • Implement and lead systems and assessments for the development, growth and improvement of new, existing and/or continuing groups
  • Provide direction and expansion of existing efforts to offer hospitality,  direction and connection to new members and participants of Mars Hill


Collaboratively Co-Lead, Design and Nurture a healthy Community Life Volunteer Culture

  • Develop structures, processes, and teams that support relational environments
  • Oversee systems and data to track and communicate with volunteers and groups members
  • Recruit, interview, place, develop and encourage new leaders and volunteers
  • Collaboratively coach, encourage and train all Community Life group leaders and volunteers
  • Develop team volunteers and leaders to provide accountability and support to other group leaders and volunteers
  • Provide and model pastoral relationships and leadership for leaders and participants
  • Collaborate with other Community Life Staff to create strategies, processes, and policies for the development of safe relational environments for volunteers and participants


Develop Content that is Theologically Sound, Developmentally Appropriate, and Culturally Relevant

  • Identify, research, discover, and/or develop resources that assist leaders, volunteers and participants
  • Develop curriculum and resources related to group processes, growth, and health
  • Participate in the development of a formational and programmatic scope and sequence
  • Collaboratively develop and lead formational events
  • Provide a “pastoral voice” during Sunday mornings, teaching 1-4 times per year
  • Provide helpful resources for all Mars Hill ministries to improve the quality of all small groups at Mars Hill
  • Cultivate peer-pastoral relationships outside Mars Hill in order network with local/national leaders and glean best ministry practices applicable to the Mars Hill context.


Participate as a member of the Mars Hill Pastoral Team

  • Provide pastoral care, crisis management, crisis intervention, and resource connection
  • Anticipate and respond to the crisis and care needs of those in your care
  • Carry out pastoral responsibilities [as needed] such as:  weddings, funerals, child dedication services, baptisms, pastoral appointments, visitations, mentoring, Sunday care, and on-call responsibilities
  • Be available and present on Sunday mornings, providing proactive and responsive care
  • Train other staff and volunteer pastors in a specific area of expertise


Participate as a fully invested member of the Community Life and the Mars Hill Staff.

  • Participate in ministry-wide events and activities as necessary
  • Participate and take personal initiative in staff development and other educational opportunities, maintaining excellent understanding of culture and all developmental life-stages
  • Assist the Community Life Team with other tasks and projects, attend scheduled team meetings, and assist in the development of the annual department budget
  • Communicate the underlying vision and theology driving program strategy in all available areas of the Mars Hill community
  • Collaborate with the other ministries of Mars Hill and participate in cross-functional ministry teams
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required
