Job Description for:     Children’s Pastor

Scope:  Full time elected pastoral staff (for a licensed minister)

Supervisor:   Spiritual Development Pastor

Summary:   Lead and direct the children’s ministry on Sundays and weekdays

1.  Plan, direct, and provide leadership for the entire church program for children (nursery through 6th grade).  This includes but is not limited to Sunday School, Children’s Church, VBS,  Fall Festivals, and children’s choir/ arts programs.

2.  Recruit, train, and supervise the team of children’s workers who teach classes and lead ministries.  Utilize the ‘church unleashed’ philosophy of equipping members to do ministry to the maximum extent possible. Govern the assignment of rooms and budgets and materials.

3. Serve as the staff liaison to certain children’s ministries that are lay-led. These include MOPS, AWANA, homes school support groups, and Trail Life. This means you are not the direct supervisor nor point leader of these ministries – you simply support the lay people who do lead them.  These are “unleashed” ministries that are not required to be part of our church program.

4. Supervise paid ‘interns’ and other part time paid children staff, including nursery workers.

See that Background checks are completed on all church staff and all volunteers who work with children.

5.  Make every possible effort to see that all children are safe while attending our church. This includes, but is not limited to, teachers training in fire drills, protection against inappropriate touching (by teachers or other children), children who bite or hit, and strict restrictions on who picks up small children after any event.  Work cooperatively with the Safety team now in place.

6. Involve the Children’s ministry in major themes and campaigns of the church as practical.
Provide seasonal opportunities for children to be part of the adult worship services.

7.  Attend pastoral staff meetings and be part of the planning and discussions regarding the vision and direction of the church.   Assist and support other pastors with their special events as time and opportunity permit,  and expect them to do the same for children’s events.
