Compass Church (recently changed from the name of First Presbyterian Church of Salinas) has a rich and storied history. Although it is 141 years old, only five pastors have served the church. The fifth and current pastor, Mike Ladra,
has continued the tradition of long-tenured pastors. He joined the team 28 years ago in 1987, and has transitioned the church from traditional to a multi-site church with three styles of worship services. Perhaps unexpected is that Compass Church (CC) is innovative,
always adapting in order to reach an ever-changing demographic. People are drawn to CC because of the dynamic messages, inspirational worship, and strong ministry to children and students.
Compass is a church that is difficult to label. They are Presbyterian in name, but recently left the PCUSA to join the ECO (The Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians). However, they are also very much influenced by both Saddleback’s purpose-driven
strategy and Willow Creek’s “unchurched Harry” philosophy. They are driven to reach the unreached. In fact, it is the core of CC’s mission statement: “To Save the Unsaved.” Their focus on this is unrelenting. To more accurately reflect who they are, they very
recently made the decision to change their name. The branding, signage and websites are being overhauled to reflect this, and all will be fully implemented and unveiled by this fall.
The role of Pastor of Men is strategic to future growth at CC. Simply put, the leadership believes, “You reach a man for Jesus, you change the marriage, the family, and ultimately the nation.” The church has proven the ability to attract men to the weekend
worship experience. This Pastor will be responsible to attract men to small groups and other venues where they can become Godly, spiritual leaders.
The ideal candidate for the position of Pastor of Men will be a man who has been serving the church for at least a decade. He isn’t looking for a stepping-stone to something else; rather, he is looking for a place to plant for many years. He has a background
that shows stability and growth. His wife embraces his ministry, loves the local church, and is looking forward to volunteering somewhere in the church. This individual is an influencer and a people magnet. His ability to attract, equip, empower, and lead
men is part of his wiring and reputation. He is a stong, engaging teacher with a big vision. He will possess knowledge and experience in small groups and have a passion to help others experience the life transformation that can happen in community. He’s probably
been knocked down a time or two in his life, which has given him an empathy and care for those he pastors. It is likely that the Pastor of Men will have a bachelor’s degree and some theological education. A Master of Divinity is desired.
