Director of Worship


Reports to: Senior Pastor

Supervises:  Traditional Worship Leader / Organist

Status:         Full-Time Position

FLSA:          Exempt

Effective:     June 15, 2015



The Director of Worship is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing the elements of worship at St John’s with primary leadership given to non-traditional worship, including the contemporary Community of Joy (COJ) and the folk Saturday Evening Service (SES).


Essential Functions

  • Provide musical leadership for non-traditional worship services.
  • Skilled instrumentally, prefer guitar and keyboard
  • Skilled vocally
  • Skilled to lead volunteer worship leaders (instrumentalists and vocalists)


  • Provide musical leadership for occasional worship services
  • Advent, Holy Week, Other special services


  • Recruit, equip, and schedule worship volunteers.
  • Vocalists
  • Instrumentalists
  • Technology (slide operators, sound operators)
  • Assisting Ministers for SES
  • Assistant Worship Leaders for COJ


  • Work collaboratively with the Worship Staff to plan weekly worship
  • Meet with all music staff for seasonal planning (quarterly)
  • Meet with Worship Arts Ministry Team for coordination/planning (monthly)
  • Meet with worship staff for weekly planning (weekly)


  • Conduct weekly rehearsal for both COJ and SES
  • Instrumentalists

  • Technology


  • Communicate worship updates in a timely manner
  • Create Planning Center Online worship schedule – always at least 6 month in advance (themes, Scripture, liturgy)
  • Update Planning Center Online worship schedule – finalized planning at least two weeks in advance (music selection, vocalists, instrumentalists, baptisms, slide operators, sound operators, etc.)       
  • Communicate weekly with the pastors and those responsible for the bulletins and slide creation


  • Oversee all aspects of technology as it relates to worship
  • Manage and trouble-shoot sound board
  • Manage and trouble-shoot slides and projector
  • Manage and trouble-shoot worship planning (PCO)


  • Provide supervision for the Traditional Worship Leader / Organist
  • Conduct annual performance review
  • Provide support for Traditional Worship
  • Meet regularly for worship planning


  • Serve collaboratively with the greater St John’s staff
  • Participate in weekly Staff Chapel
  • Participate in bi-monthly Staff Meetings
  • Participate in annual Staff Retreat


Core Competencies

  • A disciple of Jesus Christ, committed to growing in faith through prayer, scripture study, and the ministry of the church, meanwhile acting as a fully invested associate of the St John’s faith community
  • A healthy mind and positive attitude with strong leadership skills and a solid understanding of a hierarchical work system in order to create and inspire a healthy team
  • Experience in leading contemporary worship music and music leading; instrumentalist preferred (guitar, bass, vocals, or piano/keyboard)
  • Experience in organization and event planning or worship planning
  • Ability to lead and supervise music staff to serve effectively in worship
  • Ability to lead, recruit, and equip volunteers to serve effectively in worship
  • A strong working knowledge of varied types of technology with the capacity and willingness to learn new technologies, software programs, or online technologies, including worship technology
  • Ability to think creatively, take direction and criticism, and grow an idea from grassroots status to thorough implementation
  • A team player who contributes to a positive work and worship environment with a willingness and desire to participate in a multiple staff team and multiple ministry staff.
  • Compliance and “CLEAR” report with background checks done on a regular basis and provided by the church
