POSITION TITLE: Children's Pastor/Family Pastor

REPORTS TO: Lead Pastor

MINISTRY SIZE: Nursery = 25+; Preschool = 25+; Elementary = 50+ (TOTAL:100)

POSITION SUMMARY: Pastor to the children and young families of MWC

PHILOSOPHY OF CHILDREN’S MINISTRY: MWC Kids exists to disciple kids & equip families.

Children's Ministry is Family Ministry

Children's ministry is firstly ministry to families with children (Nursery-5th), because unlike any other demographic represented in the church, children are incapable of living (driving, being involved, etc.) independently. The Children's ministry of MWC must approach the mission informed and committed to the discipleship of each child's family unit. This means:

Parents/Guardians need to be equipped

As totally dependent on those caring for them, if children do not have home situations that affirm or support their faith journey, their walk with Jesus will be a struggle.

A sound Children's ministry should offer support, discipleship, service opportunities, and consistent communication for parents/guardians.

Parents/Guardians need to be equipped with information about the ministry (constantly), resources to further their growth as parents, and ideas for their child-rearing journey.

A healthy children's ministry does not seek to provide the "sole spiritual element" to a child's journey by taking the reins from the parents.

A healthy children's ministry will teach parents/families how to hold the reins and shepherd their children biblically and effectively.

Children's Ministry is Highly Attractive

Perhaps more than any other area of local church ministry, effective children's ministry must be highly attractive. Any respective programming associated with this ministry needs to offer a level of "It-Factor" that will get kids motivated to return again and invite their friends. It is hard enough for parents of nursery/elementary age children to get to church gatherings or events, it is nearly impossible if their kids are not motivated to attend. Things to keep in mind:

The ministry must be inviting to kids, but also to parents.

This means safety, intentionality, communication, organization, and the perception (and reality) of strong leadership are a must for eye-catching Children's ministry.

Creativity, fun, enthusiasm, high-energy, and structure are all necessary elements.

In a church like MWC, solid gospel-content (in worship gatherings) will also be important.

The spaces and places Children's Ministry inhabits must be highly attractive to kids and parents.

Children's Ministry Demands Intentionality

All effective ministry is intentional. Intentional children's ministry may be more vital for assimilating new families into a church than any other area. One of the most common times for unchurched or de-churched families to search for a good church is when kids come into the picture. An intentional

children's ministry will be a place where new families land and stick quickly. It will also be organized (in terms of follow-up and care) to specifically root new families who show up to gathering or events. Maintenance mode is not a possibility for Children's ministry at MWC. The Children's Pastor should

come in and seek to develop a strong scalable vision that both shepherds the flock, aligns to the church vision, and reaches children and families in the surrounding community.

Children's Ministry is Team-Ministry

MWC Pastors and Staff are hired to be initiators, not implementers. Implementers need instruction, and take their cue from initiators. Initiators team-build, equip, and empower. They recruit, train, and mobilize people in ministry. Implementers think about what's right in front of them, exhibit tunnel vision and task-orientation, and work to maintain what they receive. Initiators are people-magnets who gather high-capacity people around them and deploy them on the mission. The Children's

pastor must be an initiator. (not saying there is anything wrong with implementers, but the Pastors must all be initiators in order to equip those around them for the work of the ministry.)

The Children's Pastor must also recognize that the pastors and staff of MWC are engaged in team ministry. MWC has no silos, and we're not looking to build any. The Children's ministry will work closely with the youth ministry in offering holistic gospel-centered discipleship to families.

Children's Ministry inhabits the Church of today (not tomorrow)

A key part of MWC DNA is that all people, all ages are called to be the Church. As kids get saved and discipled, they should begin serving in all manners of ministries. The Children's Ministry should develop a strong Children's leadership team, mentored by both the Children's Pastor and the volunteer staff. Tracking the growth and development of the Children's leaders and working to assimilate all kids into youth ministry at the appropriate time (6th grade) is vital.

Children's Ministry is a Safe-Haven

While equipping and discipling MWC families with children is a huge part of this role and ministry, the mission to the unsaved kids and families of the greater Wichita area is just as vital. There are over 100,000 kids in the immediate area around MWC who do not know Jesus and are disconnected from a local church. MWC Kids needs to deploy our kids and families into this region, engaged in the mission of Jesus to reach the lost. As unsaved kids connect, the Children's Ministry should be a safe-haven where they can find wholeness and life in a world devoid of both. The dozens of elementary schools in the community around us should be gospel-targets for MWC families and kids.

It is anticipated that the qualities described in 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus 1:5-9; 1 Peter 5:1-4 will be part of the character of the person who will serve as the children’s pastor of MWC Church. This would include:
