Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries

Christ Church Easton
Easton, Maryland, United States

Categories: Youth Pastor
Denominations: Episcopal
Church Size: 251 to 350
Job Type: Full-Time

Job Description:

Reporting directly to the Rector, the Pastor for Teens and Young Adults will assist in all aspects of parish life, taking full responsibility for the church’s teens and young adult ministries.  He or she will work to bring teens and young people to the knowledge and love of God and, by word and example, encourage all people in their lives in Christ.

Specific Areas of Responsibilities:

  • Evangelism and Church Growth.
  • Program Development, Planning and Budgeting (includes some fundraising)
  • Identifying, Recruiting, Training and Leading volunteers and leaders.
  • Ministry-related Communications to Parish and Community.
  • Church School Christian Education Program for Middle School.
  • Coordinate Acolyte leadership for worship.
  • Small Groups (CORE) for Middle School and High School (Teen Alpha)
  • Specific Education and Worship Opportunities:  Confirmation Classes and Experiences; opportunity to collaborate with the Contemporary and Traditional Music directors.
  • Justice Ministry.
  • Mission Trips (local, regionally and international)  We are inclined to focus our CORE and Young Adult programming on a fulfilling goal of a Mission.  There is little merit in constant training without defined application.  We know missions to be effective in building an awareness of person’s relationship with God and the community of faith.

Worship -- The Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries will play an important role in our evangelistic pursuit of the strategy of “building churches.”  For the sake of our organization, every worship service is considered a “church.”  On Sunday morning worship services are at 8:00am, 9:15am, and 11:00am (summers at 8:00am and 10:00am).  In the office we discuss this as the three “churches.”  Our current goal is the growth of the new worship service on Saturday evening. He/she will have roles to play in this work.

Christian Education for Teens -- The Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries will be expected to work with the Rector, Assistant and Staff to plan and execute learning opportunities and experiences that will nurture the ministries and faith of teens and young adults.  He or she will take the lead in organizing the Church School for Middle School teens.

One particular area that has yet to find broad success has to do with parental involvement.  This is not a unique difficulty; but it is one that is essential for us to address more effectively.  Therefore the Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries will create and build a program that is intentional about encouraging parents in their lives as Christians and work to develop that community in the church.

Christian Discipleship for Young Adults – This is charting new waters in our parish ministry.  We see in our community a need to reach out to persons in their 20’s and 30’s in a special and compelling proclamation of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  The issues in our area are not unique – loneliness, drug addiction, capitulation to the Gospel of Consumption and raw ignorance of the possibilities of faith in Jesus Christ.  We are looking for a person who feels the call to bring hope into such audiences.

Pastoral Care -- The Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries will address pastoral matters that arise in the course of his/her ministry, but this is a team-effort.  He/she will work with the Rector and Staff to increase the depth, breadth, and reach of pastoral care.

Church growth – In all aspects of the Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries work, he/she will strive to grow the church both in depth of faith as well as in strength of numbers.  We are in the process of trying to move outside the current limitations of our ministries; and we know changes are coming.  How we apply the time and assets of the church will depend on the effectiveness of our efforts in growing the congregation on every level.

Administration –  The Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries will be responsible for the organization and implementation of those programs he or she is involved in directly.

Preference will be given to those who have a degree or its equivalent in childhood education,  Christian education, seminary, and those in related fields.  While educational background and experience matter, we also take into account a person’s heart, and their natural talents and gifts.  We believe the Holy Spirit may also open our eyes to seeing something more important than degrees or certifications in a person’s consideration, and we have learned to trust that revelation.

We seek candidates who have a calling to serve in the particular mission field of teens and young adults.  The best candidate will also have the organizational skills, experience, ability, and enthusiasm for Christian formation, teaching, and program development.  The person invited into this ministry will have an appreciation and an enthusiasm for the fundamentals of these ministries.  He/She should therefore demonstrate both talents and some related experience in this area.

We are seeking someone who has true gifts for the development of compelling youth ministry for the building up of the Kingdom of God.  This person must be able to communicate with conviction and clarity.  We seek someone who finds joy, excitement and a sense of fulfillment working with people. Come to us as a person with a passionate and compassionate faith and a prayerful presence during good and bad times, and be a living example of that in your own daily life and witness.

The Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries will be considered a full colleague and an integral part of the entire ministry.  We expect the relationship to be grounded in our common faith in Jesus Christ.  We value dialogue, dedication, and determination.  We expect openness and honesty, patience and cooperation.  The Pastor for Teen and Young Adult Ministries will be entrusted with much and held accountable for that trust.  The person best suited for this position will be hopeful, creative, and dependable.

To understand that “good enough” is not, will resonate with our desire to be excellent in our undertakings.  The person must be able to work well with others.  Having a good sense of humor is essential.  We want to enjoy working together to make a difference in the world.  We understand that programs change and that ministry focus must accommodate the realities of the communities we seek to reach, but fundamentally a willingness to work with the Rector’s vision for the future of the Parish is expected.
