Job Description:

Fox Valley Church in West Dundee, IL ( is searching for its next Pastor/Director of Children and Family Ministries, and it’s a wonderful time in the life of the church to join this dynamic team. The Children and Family Ministry at Fox Valley is looking for a leader who will build out the current potential, leverage the solid foundation of ministry, and work to elevate the Children and Family ministry to a new level through a clear vision, effective organization, and volunteer/parent empowerment.

A multisite church within the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA), Fox Valley Church has two campuses: West Dundee and Pingree Grove.  With a combined worship attendance of around 500, the church is located 35 miles northwest of Chicago.

Fox Valley Church is a place that values intentional ministry and desires to lead people into deeper levels of transformational faith.  A consistent, collaborative approach from the Senior Pastor has created a team environment that has infused the culture of the church, lending itself to creating a workspace where ministry staff is positioned to be an integral part of the decision-making process.  Intentional teamwork and a desire to reach people with the Gospel are clearly evident at this family-friendly church.

The West Dundee campus has about 80 children (birth-5th grade) on a typical Sunday morning with 75-80 total volunteers that are split into three rotating teams.  The Pingree Grove site has about 30 children (birth-5th grade) on a Sunday morning with 30 total volunteers that are also split into three rotating teams.

Fox Valley Church is committed to integrating a “family ministry” perspective into all its next-generation programs.  They are devoted to walking alongside parents as they disciple and spiritually nurture their children into committed followers of Jesus Christ.  The incoming Pastor/Director will have a shaping influence on how this ministry will develop moving forward, and how the family component will be integrated into the overall objectives of the ministry.

While highly committed volunteers consistently give their time and talents, intentional effort must be given to inviting new people to join the team.  Coupled with the task of volunteer growth is the desire for more volunteer training. These kinds of efforts will be necessary and critical to growing and retaining a strong volunteer team.

The next Pastor/Director will have the opportunity to craft and articulate his or her own vision for the children’s ministry at Fox Valley. Parents and volunteers are looking for a leader to bring a clear vision and plan that will guide and inform the various offerings within the children’s ministry.  They want to be inspired, and desire a leader to clearly communicate the path toward the future. In turn, this leader will find a group of committed and supportive people who buy into the vision, eagerly participating and generating excitement around and within the ministry to children and their families.

As Fox Valley Church looks for its next Pastor/Director of Children and Families, there is the awareness that this person must be a highly relational leader that not only interacts well with children and parents but also has a demonstrated capacity for volunteer recruitment, retention, and training.  This individual will exude a love for children and families that will attract new volunteers and inspire existing ones in a way that will propel them into the ministry; he or she will show their love for children as they lead by example. Developing relationships to nurture and establish a strong base in the ministry will be critical in moving the children and family ministry forward.  Coupled with a natural ability to relate well with others, the ideal candidate will have strong organizational skills that will bring the strategic planning of effective systems to the children’s ministry.

The incoming Pastor/Director of Children and Families will be able to take their previous experiences in children and family ministry as well as their educational background and apply them here in fresh, creative ways. This will be evidenced in having an awareness of best practices, current curriculum and resources, training options for volunteers and an overall comprehension of what is needed to effectively lead a children’s ministry in a larger church or multisite context.

Additionally, the Pastor/Director of Children and Families will be responsible for clearly casting long-term vision for the ministry and developing a plan that annually measures growth and effectiveness.  The church is eager to welcome an organized leader who will inspire volunteers, parents, and children in a way that creates excitement and momentum - drawing people in and integrating them in meaningful ways.  This vision will also include strategies to recruit, train and retain volunteers so that people feel personally encouraged, equipped to serve, and enjoy being part of the children’s ministry team.  Success in this role will also include specific initiatives that effectively reach out into the community in meaningful ways that draw families into the life of the church.

The right candidate will be motivated by the complexities that arise in a multi-site setting, and will have the capacity to manage and delegate well.  The dynamic of this environment calls for a leader who enjoys assessing effectiveness, troubleshooting problems and addressing individual challenges that may arise as a unique expression of ministry in a specific campus context.

The ability to communicate in a variety of ways will be an essential skill for the next Pastor/Director at Fox Valley Church.  This effective leader will understand and practice strategic, thoughtful and well-timed communication as a means of ensuring the ministry flows smoothly, but also as a means to ensure healthy alignment in the overall ministry of the church, and as an active participant at the staff leadership table.

Overall, the Pastor/Director of Children and Families will embody a genuine passion and love for children—one that is driven and invigorated by a heartfelt desire to see children and families introduced to a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and set on a path toward a vital, dynamic lifelong journey of faith.  With this leader in place, Children’s Ministry at Fox Valley Church will be bright indeed.
