In 2003, John Ortberg left Willow Creek Community Church and assumed his current role as the Senior Pastor.  In 2007, MPPC was listed as the 17th Most Influential Church in America, largely due to John Ortberg’s teaching and influence in the Evangelical church community.  In 2007, the Open Doors campaign led to the openings of new campuses San Mateo (2007), Mountain View (2008).  In the Fall of 2013, the leadership team set a goal of launching five campuses over the following five years, the first of which opened in San Jose this past March.  On March 2nd, 2014, the congregation voted to affirm the recommendation of the session to depart the PCUSA denomination to align with the ECO: A Covenant Order of Evangelical Presbyterians denomination.  



“Speed of the leader, speed of the team.”  Anyone familiar with that saying will understand the critical importance of the Executive Team in shaping culture.  At MPPC, John Ortberg, Scott Scruggs, and Jenni Cantron make up that team, Scott leading ministry strategy and Jenni leading campus development and operations.  Together they lead a talented and recently formed Central Services Team who shape the paradigm of ministry for all the campuses.  


In some departments staff transition has been significant, but given the fresh vision and new direction of MPPC, staff change-over is unavoidable and natural.  The strength of John, Scott, and Jenni’s leadership is found in the God-honoring way they handle the transitions, preserving the culture and integrity of the church, as well as it’s reputation in the larger community.


Today MPPC has never been stronger. With roughly 5400 each week in worship (including students and children) MPPC continues to be known for its strong teaching, culturally strategic location, and generous resources.  


Sr. Pastor John Ortberg articulated three strategic values driving MPPC into the future: 1)Innovative Ministry 2)Spiritual Formation and 3)Thoughtful Egalitarianism.  These are critical to him, shaping the culture of MPPC, and important for any new staff member to understand and resonate with.  Innovative Ministry is the area of greatest growth and the driver behind hiring the Director of Creative Media and Communications.



Menlo Park is a “digital rich” community with a congregation full of Apple, Facebook, and Google employees; yet at the time of my site-visit, MPPC did not have a mobile-responsive website.  These types of disconnects and gaps exist across MPPC’s communication paradigm and systems.  


Scott and Jenni are leading MPPC to advance and modernize many areas of its ministry and the only way this can happen effectively is with a smart Communications Director helping align and preserve the brand while developing strategies of communication that meet MPPC’s target audience right where they are.  MPPC is also in the process of developing a new visual identity and brand strategy.


From strategic communications and creative content creation to digital strategies, MPPC needs a Communications Architect with strategic leadership and the ability to identify, mobilize, and guide creatives.  The fields are ripe with potential but there is foundational building and shaping to be done first.  The right leader for this amazing opportunity will have an uncanny understanding and passion for the local church - be digitally savvy - and have a unique ability to identify, empower, coach, and unleash creatives to tell the story of MPPC in new and powerful ways.
