To serve the Evangelical Free Church of Chico (EFCC) by providing overall leadership and vision for ministry to children and their families in a way that expresses the vision and values of EFCC and encourages children to begin and grow their relationships with Jesus Christ and His people.



The City of Chico was founded in 1860 and has grown to over 33 square miles with a population of 88,634 in the incorporated area and a greater urbanized area population of approximately 100,000. Chico is located ninety miles north of Sacramento on Highway 99, in Butte County, east of Interstate 5.


One thing residents say they like about Chico is our four distinct seasons. While the summers are hot, the winters are relatively mild with 172 days of sun.  Chico has maintained a special sense of community and small-town living as it has developed into a vibrant regional center for business, recreation and cultural activities. It is home to Chico State University with about 16,000 students.  There are also many recreational opportunities in and around Chico. Bidwell Park one of the largest municipally owned parks in the nation (3,670 acres), and offers numerous trails for biking, hiking and equestrian use.


EFCCis served by a staff of 20 including a Lead Pastor, Worship Pastor, Adult Ministries Pastor, Student Ministries Pastor and a Senior Care Pastor. Additionally, there is a Women’s Ministries Director and Children’s Director and Office support staff. EFCC has approximately 650 in weekly attendance with 120 children in Children’s Ministries on Sunday mornings. There is a strong volunteer base and a focus on building strong families.  The campus of EFCC occupies 5 acres in the heart of Chico, nestled in a neighborhood near Bidwell Park. Our facilities are clean, modern and we have a beautifully renovated Worship Center, Children’s Ministries building, Fellowship Hall, and a gymnasium. We offer two services on Sunday mornings, a blended service and a contemporary service to minister to multi-generational attenders.


Position Overview:

The Director of Children’s Ministries will take the lead role in ensuring that clear vision is cast for the ministry, and programs are implemented to achieve its mission. In particular, the Director of Children’s Ministries will be responsible for ministry planning, program/curriculum selection and development, volunteer recruitment, training and communication, staff management and development, parent communication and partnership, child safety and security and special event planning. He/she is also responsible for partnering with other staff members and pastoral leadership of EFCC to ensure that the vision and direction of our Children’s Ministry is aligned with that of the church as a whole.  This position reports directly to Lead Pastor.

  • Has a missional philosophy of ministry that affirms the dynamic between being “gathered” (for nurture, community, and worship) and “scattered” (to reach out to the unchurched and non-believers).

  • Proven ability and experience in teaching children

  • Proven ability to plan, organize materials and events, multi-task and work independently as needed to meet deadlines.

  • Proven ability to recruit, motivate, train, mentor and equip volunteers.

  • Excellent administrative, communication and teaching skills.

  • Possesses a respect for parents and their role as the God-given authority in their children’s lives

  • Ability to deal diplomatically with parents and address their concerns.

  • Computer literacy and fluency using Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Publisher.

  • Minimum 2-3 years’ experience in Children’s Ministry and/or commensurate experience for the various duties of the position

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field



  • Be present on Sunday mornings overseeing Children’s Ministries classes and activities

  • Assure classes (nursery - 6th grade) are fully staffed and running smoothly.

  • Evaluate, implement and monitor all curriculum and activities for all children’s classes and events.

  • Recruit, train and coordinate volunteers participating in Children’s Ministry.

  • Send out quarterly newsletters to all parents and children’s ministry volunteers.

  • Supervise Nursery Coordinator & Children’s Ministry Assistant.

  • Work with resource staff in providing/ordering curriculum and supplies.

  • Communicate with parents regarding any concerns or problems that may arise during Sunday morning programs.

  • Train workers on emergency procedures including evacuation drills.

  • Plan and recruit volunteers for all Children’s Ministry events outside of Sunday classes.  This may include but not be limited to: Easter Extravaganza, VBS, Summer & Winter Camps, Fundraisers, Harvest Festival, Christmas Extravaganza and monthly pre-teen Fellowship Events.

  • Find tangible ways to express love, affirmation, and encouragement to volunteers under your leadership, pray for them consistently, and seek to develop a positive culture of joy and hope.

  • Work with musicians to continue the development of a Children’s Worship Program.

  • Attend appropriate regional and national seminars and workshops.

  • Purchase and utilize resources for professional development for volunteers

  • Prepare an annual written report and evaluation of Children’s Ministry.

  • Prepare, in advance, an annual calendar with plans for the upcoming year.

  • Attend staff, congregational and business meetings and church events.

  • Fully support the Lead Pastor’s vision and direction.
