Job Description:


The Director of Children & Family Ministries is responsible for maintaining and expanding

the children’s Sunday School program (age 4 - 5th grade) and nursery (newborn - age 4),

developing and nurturing family related church activities, and supporting the children’s

choir, all in partnership with the Children & Family Ministries (CFM) elders, Children &

Family Ministries Committee and Westwood Presbyterian Church (WPC) Pastors.


General Responsibilities:

? Support the vision of the Session by developing, supervising and taking

responsibility for all programs and curricula for children (excluding the WPC

preschool) and their families, in partnership with the CFM elders and CFM


? Work closely with elders and CFM committee members and inspire them to build

teams and engage new church families

? Invite, equip, empower and communicate with volunteers and Sunday School


? Ensure that a welcoming, safe and nurturing environment is created and maintained

for the children and their families

? Maintain open and on-going communication through regular contact with families,

CFM committee members, staff and Sunday School teachers

? Attend monthly CFM meetings and weekly staff meetings

? Serve as a liaison to the WPC Preschool and collaborate with its Director on joint

projects and events, and on religious education within the Preschool classroom

Specific Responsibilities:

Sunday School (Age 4 through 5th grade)

? Lead children’s worship services for grade-school children and assist teachers in

leading Sunday School classes

? Establish a fun and inspiring Sunday School environment that children enjoy and

look forward to attending

? Implement creative and fresh ways to teach young children

? Seek opportunities to incorporate Audio/Visual elements into Sunday School


? Ensure the Sunday School curriculum is meeting the church’s needs; adjust

curriculum biennially and as needed

? Recruit, train and nurture volunteer teachers from the congregation

? Maintain a schedule for Sunday School teachers and obtain substitutes or fill in as


? Organize, plan and lead a yearly Sunday School teachers training and retreat

Nursery (Newborn through Age 4)

? Establish and maintain child care policies and practices that will ensure a safe and

nurturing environment in our nursery.

? Interview, hire and train staff for the WPC infant and toddler rooms

? Organize and maintain the work schedule for the nursery staff for Sunday morning

worship, special holiday services, and additional church-related family events, such

as the family retreat, family mixers and adult education opportunities

? Create brief weekly, circle time activities for children to include a Bible story and

song; provide all necessary materials for the circle time to workers in order for

them to share the lesson with the children each Sunday

? Communicate regularly with childcare workers and supervise them to ensure they

fulfill their obligations as outlined in their job description and covenant

? Provide childcare workers with an opportunity to discuss their performance,

responsibilities and growth through an annual review

Mid-Week Program

? Develop and implement a teaching plan and curriculum for Wednesdays at

Westwood, the mid-week children’s education program offered for children in

preschool through 5th grade

? Recruit, train and nurture Wednesday volunteer leaders and assistants from the


? Coordinate with the WPC Music Director to implement children’s choir programs

Family Activities

? Plan, coordinate and implement Vacation Bible School (VBS) each summer,

including recruiting volunteer staff, organizing curriculum and overseeing finances.

? Participate in planning and implementation of special seasonal events related to

children, such as Westwood Reaches Out community service events for children,

Advent activities, Homecoming, church-wide activities, etc.

? Plan, coordinate and implement two children’s musicals annually, one during the

Christmas season and one in the summer, including recruiting volunteers, to assist

with musical accompaniment, costumes and corralling children.

? Coordinate and organize in partnership with the CFM elders and CFM committee the


? Annual family retreat

? Family mixers every three months; including a family Christmas party

? Easter Egg Hunt

? Halloween Trunk-or-Treat Halloween

? Annual family camping trip

? Annual bake-sale

? Children’s mission and outreach events

? Family-focused adult education/speakers

? Stewardship plan for children

? Family newsletter

Congregational Connections

? Write regular articles for weekly church newsletter, News and Concerns

? Ensure that the church-wide calendar is updated with family related events and that

these events are listed in News and Concerns

? Plan and present the “Children’s Message” the 2nd Sunday of each month

? Work closely with Student Ministries (middle school and high school) to seek

opportunities for partnership and coordination of family events and to ensure that

younger children play a role in Youth Sunday

? Maintain communication with WPC Preschool Director to ensure that preschoolers

and their parents are invited to church-related family events. Also work to provide

opportunities for church members to attend preschool events as appropriate, such

as parenting education discussions

? Serve as a staff member on the WPC pre-school committee

? Take an active role in advocating for children’s spiritual formation issues at church

staff meetings

? Advocate strongly for children’s needs in relation to church planning for the future

Pastoral Care Assistance

? Assist the pastors in reaching out to families in need through visits, prayer and

bringing concerns to the attention of the pastors


? Maintain records of attendance and children’s offerings

? Maintain records of expenditures for CFM, help develop and stay within CFM budget

? Monitor and maintain supplies for CFM including purchasing, developing and

distributing curriculum materials

? Assist in the development and implementation of Church-wide policies related to

children ages 0 to 5th grade, where directed


? Follow up personally with new families attending WPC, send emails and place

phone calls to establish connections

? Maintain and work with CFM committee to develop a master calendar of WPC family

events and distribute calendar to CFM committee in advance of the church year

? Regularly reach out to families who are members of WPC, engaging them and

inviting them to be a part of church events

? Network with the larger church’s Christian Education community in order to obtain

new ideas and keep the program fresh and growing

Continuing Education

? Attend an annual continuing education seminar and produce a formal, written

report to the CFM committee summarizing the conference/seminar and highlighting

ideas to implement for the following year


? Sense of calling to the spiritual development and Christian education of children

? Strong Christian faith, a commitment to Christian values and a spirit of inclusiveness

? Commitment to personal spiritual, emotional and physical well-being; inspires

spirituality by example

? Strong commitment to servant leadership, building teams and partnering with


? Ability to engage children in an age appropriate manner, respecting their unique

traits and quirks; inspire them to have fun while learning about God

? Proven experience working with young children in large and small groups; excellent

classroom management skills; ability to discern children’s needs to provide

developmentally appropriate work

? Ability to appropriately enfold children with special needs into CFM

? Equally comfortable with babies and 5th graders

? Proven ability to nurture, train and inspire volunteers

? Proven ability to build teams and accomplish goals

? Ability to nurture parental responsibility for faith development of children

? Ability to work independently and in association with a ministry team

? Excellent organizational and time management skills

? Approachable, honest, trustworthy, open-minded, inclusive, non-judgmental, patient

and hard working

? Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel) and budgeting


? Bachelor’s degree, preferably in related field and/or certified Christian Educator

? Experience working closely with children of varied ages (from very young babies

through age 11)

? Background in child development, teaching techniques, classroom management,

preparing and implementing curricula, and planning events

? Experience with group leadership, team building, and the recruiting and training of



The DCFM reports to the Pastor/Head of Staff, or their designee, and is accountable to the

Session through the Personnel Committee. Performance review annually.


Hours: Full time; required to work Sunday mornings
