Job Description


Position Summary:  The Worship Leader will lead the congregation in honoring the Lord through musical and artistic worship by:

  1. Creating an inviting, worshipful atmosphere, a space in which people can meet with God
  2. Leading the congregation and the members of the worship ministry in growing their own relationships with the Lord through worship; Establishing a God-honoring culture of worship among the congregation
  3. Mentoring a team of worship leaders who rotate in giving leadership
  4. Developing the people who serve in the worship department
  5. Providing spiritual covering to the worship department


Responsibilities: The Worship Leader must provide leadership in three areas: Organizational, Team/Event, and Support Leadership.  Initially, these areas will be small and all handled by one person.  But for the ministry to grow, the responsibilities must be spread out among others.  The worship leader must always be looking to empower others with significant responsibilities.  Leaders who are primarily “doers” limit growth.


Organizational Leadership

  1. Communicate Worship Ministry vision with worship leaders, team members, and audio/visual technicians, at least twice annually
  2. Meet regularly with the worship leaders to cast vision, encourage, and share direction and resources.
  3. Prepare and manage the Worship Ministry budget, as approved by the elders
  4. Attend leadership meetings for Newport DOVE Church ministry leaders
  5. Model leadership and collaboration to worship ministry volunteers, graciously honoring each individual’s role
  6. Meet regularly with the Senior Elder to formulate vision and strategy for Sunday celebration focus as it relates to worship expressions
  7. Identify, recruit, and train new worship leaders


Event/Team Leadership

  1. Lead worship one-two times per month for Sunday celebrations
  2. Communicate with the Senior Elder on a regular basis to collaborate themes for Sunday celebrations.
  3. Coordinate worship for special occasions as requested by the Senior Elder
  4. Pursue training and continuing education for personal leadership and development
  5. Recruit new worship ministry volunteers
  6. Provide coaching and oversight of the training of these volunteers (vocalists, instrumentalists, and audio/visual technicians)
  7. Coordinate artistic expressions of worship in Sunday celebration (drama, dance, art, tactile worship, special music, etc.), in collaboration with the Senior Elder
  8. Periodically attend the rehearsals of the other worship leaders to provide onsite coaching moments and to help maintain continuity in the Worship Ministry
  9. Provide training for worship leaders to be Worship and Creative Arts Leaders for church plants.  This training will include mentoring other worship leaders and teaching them all aspects of the worship ministry


Support Leadership

  1. Oversee scheduling of and communication to worship leaders, worship team members, and audio/visual technicians for Sunday celebrations, utilizing tools such as Planning Center Online
  2. Maintain licensing for copyrighted worship music used at Newport DOVE Church
  3. Maintain department instruments and audio/visual equipment, including overseeing upgrades when needed (upon approval of Senior Elder and elder team)
  4. Maintain and distribute resource subscriptions (ie. Worship Leader magazine)
  5. Oversee the creation of song sheets and projection lyrics of songs not included in CCLI

  2. Host – one who shows hospitality, builds rapport, works toward connectedness, and interprets the moment
  3. Shepherd – one who provides pastoral care, safety, and direction to those following
  4. Prophet – one who gives clarity and purpose, who interprets the voice and emotion of God
  5. Architect – one who designs the service plan to share the Christ Story
  6. Coordinator – one who functions as the glue, looks for synergy, develops unity, and fuels chemistry
  7. Psalmist – one who creates beauty, builds huge musical dynamics, uses the arts to their fullest




  1. Conviction that worship is for God and to God, for his honor and glory
  2. A trusting relationship with Jesus Christ that is clearly exhibited in the leader’s life – you just get the sense that they know God intimately
  3. Servant leader
  4. Values quality worship with flexibility to respond to the Holy Spirit
  5. Seeks after and follows the leading of the Holy Spirit, does not walk in the fear of man, and walks in authority



  1. Skilled instrumentalist [preferably guitar and/or piano] – a true musician
  2. Lead quality vocalist – a strong, listenable voice to be easily followed
  3. Ability to bring out the best in team members
  4. Prior experience in church or para-church worship ministry
  5. Basic knowledge of sound, video, lighting, audio recording and editing is helpful

  2. Friendly, open, honest, seeking community, encouraging, good chemistry with existing teams
  3. Must be a person of integrity
  4. Must have healthy relationship with his/her spouse and children and their support for involvement in this ministry; not enslaved to debt (except for personal residence)
  5. Leaders are expected to participate in the shared life, personal growth, and accountability of a small group


Organizational Skills:

  1. The ability to maintain quarterly schedule for him/herself, the Worship team members, handle details related to worship planning and be prepared with planning ahead in worship, using Planning Center Online
  2. The ability to organize and communicate clearly and consistently

  1. Sam’s driven by relationships not by performance and has created a tribe that serves with excellence
  2. Sam’s very trained, but humbly seeks what God is currently doing at this church
  3. Sam’s not just a worship leader, Sam is a worship MINISTRY leader
  4. Sam may (or may not) be the most creative person, but is able to LEAD the creatives
  5. Sam thinks like a high-level manager – always thinking ahead, taking care of details, and developing people
  6. Sam doesn’t feel like being good at everything is necessary, but rather is great at getting the best from the teams
  7. Sam is so teachable, and though Sam has plenty to be proud about, is just the most approachable, unpretentious person

Average total weekly hours, 20 hours, with up to 4 Sundays off and 2 weeks of paid vacation per year.  Other benefits include

Continuing education funds for training/coaching and mileage.


Salary: $20,500



A one year renewable term; appointed by the Senior Pastor in consultation with the elder team
