Job Description:

Responsible to develop and implement a comprehensive program of care, evangelism, spiritual growth and service opportunities for elementary grade children. Responsible for a Sunday morning program and a mid-week program. Responsible for recruiting, training, equipping and development of leaders and volunteers working in the ministry.


Description of duties

The duties of the Children’s Ministry Director include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work with the ministry team to develop programs for the family.

  • Provide resources and training that help parents to be spiritual leaders at home.

  • Communicate regularly with parents about what is being taught to their children.

  • Take responsibility to teach, oversee and coordinate the Sunday morning services for children early elementary (ages 5-8) and late elementary (ages 9-11).

  • Develop a team to lead and teach Wednesday Night Children’s Ministry.

  • Recruit and retain a willing and enthusiastic staff of children’s workers whose lives and families provide a godly example for the children to follow.

  • Develop schedules for teachers and volunteers within the department.

  • Provide training and support for children’s ministry volunteers.

  • Develop and shepherd teams of volunteers within your department.

  • Submit a children’s ministry budget to Family Ministry Director each year.

  • Implement and manage the children’s ministry budget.

  • Submit summer improvements to Family Ministry Director.

  • Find resources and or teaching ideas appropriate for the age levels.

  • Ensure that appropriate safety and security procedures are established and followed in the department; this includes criminal background checks for all staff and volunteers, training on child abuse and protection, health issues, First Aid Care and other procedures to ensure the safety and security of children in the department’s care.

  • Maintain good communication with other team members within the Family Ministry areas.

  • Work with other departments to suggest changes and improvements to overall children’s ministry

  • Visit or contact at least 5 people each week within ministry area by phone, card, email or home visit.

  • Plan and administrate Summer Camps as directed by Leadership team.

  • Take Minister of the week responsibilities as needed on a rotational system.

  • Attend Sunday Pre-Service meeting at 8:20 in the Green Room.

  • Complete the monthly in-home visits assigned by the Director of Pastoral Care.

  • Other duties as assigned.


Time requirements

While the time required will depend on the activities of the church, the time required generally includes working Tuesday to Friday from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Sunday mornings from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm, plus being available for other church functions as needed and faithful attendance at all church services.


Training and resources

  • Attend appropriate regional and national seminars and workshops on children’s ministry.

  • Purchase books, tapes, and other resources for professional development.

  • Keep a journal or a file of written notes for future use.

  • A strong and growing personal commitment to Jesus.

  • A solid family that stands as a godly example for workers and children to emulate. (if married: strong marriage, obedient, not perfect, children who are serving God)

  • Strong interest and belief in the value of Christian education for children.

  • A heart, passion, and love for the family and children, particularly of those in the age group the department serves.

  • Committed to values and vision of the church and of the Family Ministry.

  • Teaching, organizational, creative, and administrative skills.

  • Communication and interpersonal skills - a “people” person.

  • Ability to enable and empower others to carry out work of the department’s ministry and be supportive of their efforts.

  • Self-starter – able to motivate self to carry on sometimes difficult or thankless tasks.

  • An active member of Family Church, fully embracing the church's vision, values, and Statement of Faith.

  • Ability to relate well to children, classroom teachers, and parents.
