The roles and responsibilities of the Pastor of Students and Young Adults (PSYA) are as follows:

The PSYA exists to direct the Spiritual growth of the Middle/High school (ages 6-12th grade) and Young Adults (ages 18-29).  The PSYA is responsible to lead and teach Middle and High School students as well as the Young Adults which will meet on different nights during the week.  He will direct an on-going discipleship program for students including small groups and conduct several annual events including: retreats, outreaches, state-side mission trips and Camp Patmos.  He is also responsible to raise up and build into leaders who have a clear passion for and desire to build relationships with teens both inside and outside the Student Ministry.


The expectation is to provide leadership that will enable this ministry to grow “deep and wide” attracting new students while simultaneously creating an atmosphere for discipleship and spiritual growth for our current students.  Student Ministry and teens will be heavy on your heart – we want someone who is so “on-fire” and sold out for this generation it is very evident in your life.

  1. Providing primary leadership to staff and volunteers of Middle & High School and Young Adult Ministries.

  2. To see the youth reached with the gospel and become reproducing disciples of Christ (Matthew 28:18-20).

  3. To see the Word of God become relevant in the daily lives of students, young adults and leaders, impacting their relationship with God, their peers, the church family, and those who do not know Christ (II Timothy 3:15-18); being able to teach God’s word in a compelling Bible-based, Christ-centered and relevant ways to teens and young adults.

  4. To see the families of our teens and young adults strengthened spiritually by working with the parents in the overall objective of training them to be followers of Christ (Ephesians 6:1-4).

  5. To see students and young adults integrated into the life of the church, giving them a positive experience of life in the body of Christ that will go with them into their adult life (Ephesians 4:1-6).


The Pastor of Students and Young Adults (PSYA) must:

  1. Meet the biblical qualifications for an elder/overseer listed in 1Timothy 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9, maintaining proper practices in his home and be a spiritual leader to his family.

  2. Have the ability to lead, motivate, train and direct with a positive attitude

  3. Have the ability to lead and work well with volunteers. Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain healthy and motivating relationships with all students, parents, church staff, congregation, and community.

  4. Be an active member of Northampton Bible Church, fully supporting and implementing the vision, values and leadership. As well as attending services and church events.

  5. Have a proven track record of a sustained healthy, thriving Student Ministry with at least 3-5 years experience.


The Pastor of Students and Young Adults (PSYA):

  1. Will provide Spiritual leadership, direction and oversight to all aspects of the Middle School, High School and Young Adult Ministries. The PSYA will serve as the primary pastor and communicator to these students.

  2. Is to reflect the conviction that the Scripture clearly views parents as the primary shepherds (disciple makers) of their children and that the church plays a very important, yet secondary role in this endeavor.

  3. Must put a significant amount of time into training and equipping (discipling) parents to disciple their children as well as provide excellent ministries to support what the parents are teaching and modeling in their homes.

  4. Will have a clear passion for Middle/High School students and Young Adults. He will have the ability to relate to and develop strong relationships with them and be a champion for the next generation, connecting them to the overall body of Northampton. In doing this the PSYA will develop and administer a comprehensive spiritual growth plan for the students of Northampton, including: small groups (inside and outside of church), one-on-one mentoring and other discipleship-focused programs. The PSYA will plan events that meet the student needs of growth, fellowship, discipling and even down time (“fun” events that will create environments where students can connect and grow on a friendship level).  The PSYA will ensure that the Student and Young Adult Ministry is healthy, growing and operating in a way that is consistent with the mission and guiding principles of Northampton Bible Church.

  5. Will work with student ministries staff, volunteers, students, parents and young adults with the desire to help them grow in their relationship with Jesus and in their relationship with others. He will also have the ability and gifting to communicate God’s Word effectively to audiences of all ages. The vision for this role is to be a shepherd for the people associated with this ministry and to help recruit, equip, and prepare others to do the same.

  6. Will value a team approach to ministry, purposefully and strategically train and equip volunteer staff and key leaders to prepare them to minister to students and parents. In that process this person will also train and equip staff and key leaders to train and equip others to do the same (Ephesians 4:11-­12). The vision of this role is to attract and grow future leaders, and invest in them with the purpose of increasing their leadership capacity.

  7. Will provide both short-term and long-term strategy and leadership to create and maintain a ministry of excellence. This will include proper allocation and stewardship of all resources provided to Student and Young Adult Ministries, including time, money, and human resources. The PSYA will manage and operate on a budget specific to this area of ministry.

  8. Will oversee the Childrens Ministry Team.

  9. The PSYA will also work in conjunction with the Senior Pastor and Staff to provide other pastoral duties, including, but not limited to: preaching in worship services, performing weddings, funerals and baptisms, hospital visits on an as-needed basis.


The Pastor of Students and Young Adults (PSYA):

  1. Must have an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ as personal Savior and Lord and be characterized by humility while possessing a clear calling, passion and gifting to work with students and young adults.

  2. Must be committed to the church’s statement of faith, vision, leadership and members.

  3. Is a member of the pastoral staff, under the supervision of the Senior Pastor but also reports to and is accountable to the Official Board.

  4. Is a full time position and the PSYA will be expected to devote time to this ministry roughly equal to an average layman’s work week plus the time a committed layman devotes to his ministry.

  5. Has other general responsibilities including contributing to the overall mission of the church through prayer, participation in Official Board meetings, and any duties assigned by the Senior Pastor and the Official Board.

  6. Thinks globally about the church and will enthusiastically take on projects and roles outside their immediate ministry when necessary.

  7. Agrees to abide by Peacemaker (Guide) Principles to resolve any conflicts or disagreements.



  1. The PSYA will provide ministry leadership for the middle and high school youth and young adults of Northampton, ensuring through relationships, on-going programs, and special events creating a balanced ministry strategy of winning, building, equipping, serving, and sending students for Jesus Christ.

  2. The PSYA will accomplish this by:

    1. Articulating a comprehensive, clear, biblical strategy for Northampton Student/ Young Adult Ministries.

    2. Building relationships with and ministering directly to students and young adults. Will spend time being where students are (i.e. schools, events, sports, etc.), investing in their lives in their world.

    3. Recruiting, training, and mobilizing an effective ministry team of both adult and student leaders. Being a student of the culture and training leaders to do the same.

    4. Supporting the parents and families of youth by proactively communicating with them regarding Northampton Student Ministries and by encouraging them in their role, through personal relationships and the cultivation of parent and family ministry programs.

    5. Providing administrative leadership for the student/young adult ministries of Northampton including: financial oversight, record keeping, curriculum selection and development, calendar planning, publicity, communication and coordination within the church.

  3. The PSYA will strive to unify the body of Christ and serve the community by strategically networking the Northampton Student/Young Adult Ministries with local churches and other ministries and local schools.

  4. The PSYA will plan and execute weekly programs designed to reach students for Sunday morning and Wednesday night.

  5. The PSYA will help to develop a strategy for bridging Middle School students, High School Students and our Young Adults into the larger church community leading to a lifetime of ministry at Northampton.

  6. The PSYA will perform all other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Pastor and be accountable to him and the Official Board.

  7. The PSYA will report and meet regularly with the staff, the Official Board, and other leadership groups as directed.

  8. While we are hiring you first and foremost and not your wife, we are looking for a man that is the primary teacher for all Student gatherings and your wife will be involved in this ministry. Your wife will support you in life and in ministry as well as play a vital role in the Student and Young Adult ministry. She will be a role model and mentor to the teen girls actively participating within the Student and Young Adult ministry. She will be visible and serve with you in this ministry and be involved in the happenings of Northampton.

The PSYA will serve as a vital part of the staff and church leadership team working toward the total body health and growth of Northampton.
