On November 20, 1905, John Lunde, a young Norwegian-speaking man with a heart for immigrants, began making friends with fellow Norwegians, the newest Americans seeking new life in the land of opportunity. Lunde led many to accept Christ, and with eight
others, settled on Staten Island to found the Norwegian Evangelical Free Church Mission. Early in 1908, land was purchased on Clove Road, and by late that year construction of the first Salem sanctuary began. Meetings were originally held exclusively in the
Norwegian language, but naturally underwent a gradual change toward English. In January of 1935, the church was renamed “Salem Evangelical Free Church.” By 1941, all Sunday services were in English. Almost 110 years later, Salem Church is no longer “that Norwegian
church on Clove Road,” but is still seeing God change lives. The methods and demographics have changed, but the message is still the same.
Today, 25-30 different cultures are represented at Salem and they reach new people every week. The current church property on Clove Road was purchased in 1948. On July 11, 1954, the main auditorium, parking lot, and landscape were completed and the first
service was held in the new church building. Salem’s most recent major building program was the construction of the Tom Maddox Memorial Center, which was dedicated in June 1999, in memory of an active member of the congregation who died of cancer. In recent
years, Salem has outgrown its facility, and plans for refurbishing and possibly expanding the campus are underway. The church has a strong desire to plant other churches or establish satellite campuses.Salem is affiliated with the Evangelical Free Church of
America (EFCA). It has strategic partnerships with many Christian ministries and several local, national, and international faith-based organizations. The church, through Utopia Outreach, has partnerships with several New York City licensing agencies as well
as other government and corporate affiliations.
Salem Church is looking for a passionate Pastor of Worship Arts who is gifted both vocally and instrumentally. The Worship Pastor will be expected to have excellent team building abilities, as well as administrative skills. The ideal candidate will have
the ability to recruit, train, and shepherd volunteers that are a part of the Worship Team and execute technical, creative, and musical aspects of the services.
The ideal candidate will have had 5+ years of progressively responsible ministry and worship leadership experience. The new Worship Pastor must have excellent vocal, musical, and technical ability, as well as the ability to develop volunteers toward that
end. A Bachelor’s Degree is required, although extensive ministry experience, in some cases, can be substituted. Formal education in music is preferred, but not a predetermining factor for the selection of the new Worship Pastor.
With coastline attractions, picturesque parks, and kid-friendly activities, Staten Island remains an unspoiled paradise in New York City. Staten Island lies in New York Harbor, south of Manhattan, and between New Jersey and Brooklyn. In 1898, Staten Island,
known as the Borough of Richmond, became one of New York City’s boroughs and was renamed Staten Island in 1975. Roughly triangular, the island has about 35 miles of waterfront and an area of almost 60 square miles. It is connected with Manhattan by the Staten
Island Ferry, with New Jersey by several bridges, and with Brooklyn by the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge.
Staten Island, populated by almost half a million people is mostly residential but has some manufacturing services and trade-related businesses. Wagner College, The City University of New York’s College of Staten Island, and a branch campus of St. John’s
University all call Staten Island home. Points of interest include the Staten Island Institute of Arts and Sciences, Richmond Town, Staten Island Botanical Garden, Staten Island Zoo, and High Rock Park Nature Conservation Center. Not only is it the greenest
borough, boasting around 9,300 acres of parkland, but it's also one of the most historically rich, with ties to the Revolutionary War and the abolitionist movement.
