Affiliated Minister, Center for Faith and Justice
Gospel Choir Director
Xavier University is seeking a Gospel Choir Director to serve as an affiliated minister with the Dorothy Day Center for Faith and Justice (CFJ). As a Jesuit Catholic University we are committed to deepening our recognition of the sacred and pursuing the
common good. In a community forged from diversity, the CFJ challenges and supports Xavier’s diverse constituents as they pursue these complementary ends. Through faith formation and education for social change, we seek to equip students to live in a diverse
world where faith matters and justice is imperative. The Center is built on the invitation to find God in all things and the principles of solidarity and the common good. This 9-month position has a start date of August 15, 2015.
This affiliated minister will serve as the director of the Xavier University Gospel Choir, a role which includes but is not limited to the following responsibilities: weekly rehearsals on Thursday evenings, worship services or performances about 8 times
per semester, providing a pastoral and mentoring presence to the choir, and guiding Choir board members in their spiritual development. Availability on Sunday evenings is also crucial in order to direct the choir as they minister as a part of Common Ground,
Xavier’s Protestant worship service. The position will require 8 hours per week for 9 months per year and will be supervised by the Assistant Director of Ecumenical and Multi-faith Ministry in the CFJ.
An ideal candidate will possess:
- keyboard/piano skills necessary to accompany and rehearse the choir.
- a breadth and depth of familiarity with the gospel traditions, knowing both traditional hymns and contemporary songs.
- a capacity to serve college students and journey with them in their faith.
- a demonstrated excellence in teaching that exhibits guidance beyond technical knowledge.
- decisiveness, enthusiasm, punctuality, and patience.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree. Minimum of two years of professional or paraprofessional experience directing a choir. Experience working as part of a team, working with college-age student programs and working in multiple traditions or denominations
To ensure consideration, interested and qualified candidates must submit a resume, cover letter, and the names and telephone numbers of three professional references on Xavier University's website no later than April 29, 2015.
