Modern Worship Leader

Ministry Description:

Work with the Worship Arts Coordinator in the coordination, planning and implementation of praise worship music.  Direct praise band musicians and singers while leading praise worship to provide excellent music bringing depth of meaning, passion and vitality to the worship services.  Encourage and cultivate the spiritual growth of singers and musicians.  As “Minister of Vocal and Instrumental Praise Music”, have a pastoral relationship with all those involved in praise music ministry and their families.

  • Proficient with MS Office and other software related to praise worship planning and implementation
  • Excellence in the art of praise music, praise band conducting and worship leadership

  • Passion for excellence in all aspects of music for worship
  • Ability to recruit, organize, motivate, lead, train and relate with people to use their musical gifts for worship

Ministry Responsibilities:

  • Recruit members-in-ministry (volunteers) to share musical gifts for 9:45 AM modern worship
  • Work with Worship Arts Coordinator to select music for the praise band and other groups/individuals providing music for praise worship
  • Lead Praise Band rehearsals and provide for the spiritual and musical development of its members
  • Instill in Praise Band members an understanding of their shared musical gifts as ministry in service to God
  • Assist in rehearsing and preparing special music groups and soloists
  • Assist in the coordination of 9:45 modern worship elements including sound design, non-musical worship participants (communion, greeters, ushers, sound, worship hospitality) and other areas as needed
  • Provide music titles and info. for worship planning to the Worship Arts Coordinator according to schedule
  • Be familiar with and abide by Church Policies, The Employee Handbook,  Safe Sanctuaries Policy and the Staff Expectations and Covenant
  • Champion the church’s purpose, vision, mission and journey
  • Direct Praise Band and lead praise worship in praise services
  • Actively seek out ways to connect the community with FUMC through praise music ministries
  • Maintain database of praise music/songs used in worship
  • Utilize “The Planning Center Online” and/or other electronic tools for worship coordination
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Worship Arts Coordinator and pastors
  • Work with Worship Arts Coordinator to seek, invite, empower and schedule soloists and groups for praise worship drawing from FUMC mostly
  • Oversee the maintenance and servicing of the Church’s praise service instruments and equipment
  • Coordinate and coach musicians/vocalists to achieve excellence in their contribution to worship vitality
  • Coordinate with other choir directors and Worship Arts Coordinator
  • Other duties as needed


Education and Training:

  • Bachelor’s degree in music performance and/or music education or equivalent experience.
  • Previous successful experience in praise bands and praise worship leadership in church ministry
  • Continuing education (workshops, reading, associations, guilds, etc.)


Work Schedule:

  • The position is responsible for results rather than hours worked.
  • Estimated 11 plus hours per week, part time salaried position
  • Weekly praise team practice
  • Direct the praise team in worship at 48 Sundays a year
  • Special services during Lent, Advent and Christmas and other services as scheduled by the Worship Arts Coordinator
  • Rehearsal and service preparation time
  • Time to research appropriate music
  • Time for pastoral care, Praise Team promotion and relationship building



Salary and Benefits:

  • $7,800 per year in 2015 calendar year; opportunity for salary review in 2016
  • Pension, benefits and healthcare not included as stated in the Employee Handbook for part time staff
