Position:  Director of Children’s Ministries

 

Job Description

The individual sought for this part-time position has committed his or her life to Jesus Christ and possesses the energy and creative motivation needed for working directly with children. The Director of Children’s Ministries is responsible for planning, developing, implementing and communicating the educational ministries for the children and families of the church with the ultimate objective of growing disciples for Jesus Christ. 

 

Qualifications

 

  • Ability to develop a vision and set goals (short term and long range)
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the aptitude for working with a variety of volunteers, committee members, pastor, support staff, parents and children
  • The experience to provide sound biblical teaching for children, volunteers and parents
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Exhibits a vibrant demeanor toward children and others; is energetic and shows motivation, creativity and initiative

 

Primary Responsibilities

 

Plan, lead and facilitate a comprehensive Christian education program that provides a basis for theological and biblical enrichment for children ages infant through fifth grade

 

  • Teach children at least two Sundays per month and organize volunteers for the church’s Sunday school program:
  • “The Ark,” nursery/preschool (ages birth through toddler)
  • “God’s Super Squad,”  pre-school
  • “Faith Factory,” grades kindergarten through fifth
  • Evaluate current and proposed curriculums for theological content and effectiveness
  • Recruit, supervise, equip and support nursery volunteers and Sunday School teachers, as well as those in other roles and responsibilities to facilitate, strengthen, and grow the ministry
  • Plan, coordinate and lead continuing education training and opportunities for volunteer staff and teachers
  • Provide pastoral care to children and their families as needed (i.e. births, deaths, crisis, including conflict resolution)
  • Gather and maintain resources/supplies/curriculum related to all events, classes and children’s ministries spaces
  • Organize and maintain facilities including the children’s ministries office and classrooms; the church playground area; and storage shed
  • Lead, coordinate and work with volunteers to implement a variety of annual events that may include the following (per the fiscal year calendar – July through June):
  • summer Vacation Bible School (VBS)
  • third-grade bible presentation
  • fall harvest festival
  • children’s Christmas program
  • annual dinner-auction fundraiser
  • quarterly family fellowship events
  • presence at church ministry fair
  • beach retreats
  • promotion of Christian camps for families

 

 

 

 

 

Meet regularly and work closely with the Children’s Ministries Elder, Committee, Pastor, Director of Youth and Support Staff

  • Establish goals and identify and plan new programs
  • Assist with establishing and maintaining the Children’s Ministries income and expenses in accordance with the annual budget
  • Work with the youth director to facilitate a smooth transition between programs for students

 

Update, maintain and evaluate policy/procedures and operational practices, manuals and records for areas such as the nursery, Sunday School, VBS, annual dinner auction, etc. Coordinate training events

  • Safety exit plans, yearly drills, volunteer applications, background checks, youth protection training, attendance records, parent and emergency information, volunteer training, infant/child CPR classes

 

Publicize program events to the congregation and community. Distribution methods might include:

  • Writing articles in Templetones, the church’s monthly newsletter
  • Maintaining the Children’s Ministries web site page
  • Emailing families of children regarding upcoming programs; extended absences; or birthdays
  • Creating program flyers; bulletin inserts; announcement slides for church services
  • Maintaining the Fellowship Hall bulletin board

 

      Terms

  • Accountability: Children’s Ministry Director reports directly to the Pastor as head of staff.
  • Hours: Averages 29 hours per week over the duration of one year
  • Salary: Starting at $15.59 per hour
  • Benefits: There are no insurance or retirement plan benefits. There are six paid holidays and a two-week vacation with pay, pro-rated according to scheduled hours (e.g., if scheduled for 29 hours per week, available vacation will be 58 hours per year [2x28], and 4 hours’ pay would be given for each holiday [1/5 x 29, rounded].)
  • Performance Reviews: the initial review will be completed at 90 days and thereafter on an annual basis in concert with the salary review by the Personnel Committee with the Pastor and approved by Session
  • A LiveScan fingerprint check must be conducted and passed
  • Employment with First Presbyterian Church is at will and may be terminated by either party with two weeks’ notice (termination for cause will not require notice).
