Job Title: Director of Children’s Ministry

Position Overview: This director will function as a ministry team member reporting to the senior pastor and the Church Board, with primary emphasis on:

  • Teaching the Bible in age appropriate ways to children in the 4th grade and under
  • Helping children of our church and surrounding community come to personal faith in Jesus and grow as disciples
  • Recruiting and training volunteers for Sunday morning and weekday programs
  • Communicating with parents regarding the rationale and implementation of programs

Personal Requirements: The candidate should manifest the following personal characteristics:

  • Personally committed to Jesus Christ and exhibits the character befitting a church leader
  • A commitment to the Evangelical Covenant Church, its fellowship, theological stance and objectives
  • Knowledge of curriculum and learning styles gained through experience and / or Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in education
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of child growth and development
  • Strong administrative, leadership, communication and organizational skills
  • A member of Faith Covenant Church or willing to pursue membership promptly

Responsibilities: The director will be directly responsible to the Senior Pastor. He/she will plan, lead, implement, and evaluate ministries in consultation with the Senior Pastor in the following areas:

  • Leadership and recruitment of the Children’s Ministry Team (CMT)
  • Recruit, train and supervise volunteers
  • Oversight of the nursery and toddler’s ministry and supervision of the Nursery Coordinator
  • Working with the Nursery Coordinator to provide childcare for certain all church events: special worship services, church business meetings, fellowship events
  • Work cooperatively with the youth pastor on the program for 5th-6th graders
  • Work with the CMT to select curriculum, procure and maintain educational materials and other resources
  • Develop and implement
  • A Sunday School program (September – May)
  • A Wednesday night program that has a strong outreach component
  • A summertime outreach event (VBS)
  • A summertime children’s church program (2nd Sunday of June – Labor Day)
  • Work cooperatively with other church leaders to accomplish broader ministry goals and objectives
  • Integrate music into the program wherever possible
  • Maintain communications with parents regarding: program elements, policies, procedures and discipline guidelines
  • Encourage participation at Portage Lake Covenant Bible Camp
  • Build relationships with families
  • Administrative Duties:
  • Consult with the Executive Committee liaison
  • Participate in staff meetings (every other week)
  • Attend church board and congregational business meetings
  • Write an annual report
  • Advise the Church Board on policies concerning child protection, discipline and programs
  • Develop and manage annual Children’s Ministries budget

Terms of Employment

  • 20 hours per week
  • Reimbursement for:
  • out-of pocket expense for conducting the ministry
  • mileage at the current allowable rate (excludes commuting to and from church)
  • one training event per year
  • Annual review with the Senior Pastor and the Children’s Ministry Team
  • Must submit to a full background check
