Position Title: Souljourn Music Director

Position Overview: Lead the band and singers in creating spaces where people can meet with God

Responsible to:  Senior Pastor, Souljourn Worship Coordinator, and the Staff-Parish Relations Team

Time Requirements:  at least ten hours per week, Sunday mornings and every other Monday night


Essential Position Responsibilities:

  1. Be the Music Director for the band

  2. Provide a strong, follow-able lead vocal

  3. Live, teach, and model the principles of worship to the worship team and the congregation (make it clear that this is about Jesus, not anything else)

  4. Be winsome, collaborative, and teachable

  5. Be a natural “people developer” that grows the teams musically, relationally, numerically, and spiritually

  6. Be a true worshiper, able to take people on a journey of intimacy with God and responsiveness to the Spirit


Additional Responsibilities:

  1. Participate with the Souljourn Design Team to help plan and carry out creative and meaningful worship services

  2. Lead the selection of special music and congregational songs at Souljourn Design Team meetings

  3. Provide servant leadership for the rehearsals of the Souljourn band and singers

  4. Recruit and direct players and singers for the praise band

  5. Maintain a good working relationship with all worship ministry servants

  6. Work to continuously improve the quality, sound and performance of the band and singers

  7. Participate in special programs of the church as requested

  8. Provide for appropriate worship leadership when on vacation or leave



  1. Commitment to Jesus Christ as Lord

  2. Strong music theory background or understanding of producing a band (able to “speak the lingo”)

  3. Ability to organize, train and bring together talented praise band members and singers

  4. Energy and enthusiasm in creating a culture with vision and purpose

  5. A true musician who loves to play unto the Lord (preferably piano, but guitar works as well)

  6. Good planning, communication, and interpersonal skills

  7. Gifts of craftsmanship, creative communication, and leadership

  8. Ability to shepherd the Souljourn music team

  9. Be more of a servant than a performer or an artist

  10. Sensitivity to know the congregation (what they need, what they enjoy)

  11. Humility with ability

  12. Able to minimize distractions

  13. Always growing personally (attend continuing education opportunities, be open to coaching)
