Transitional Executive Associate Pastor


CLASS TITLE:  Transitional Executive Associate Pastor



To provide executive-level support to the Senior Pastor (whose primary calling is to steward the message, mission and vision of Trinity), session and congregation in the areas articulated below. In conjunction with the Senior Pastor’s direction and vision, and in collaboration with other senior leadership “LEAD” team members, the TEAP will collaborate with the appropriate ministry team members and staff to carry out the goals of Trinity’s session. The TEAP will ordinarily serve as the acting senior pastor when called upon by the Senior Pastor, take on special projects as requested by the Senior Pastor, preach occasionally, and perform regular pastoral duties.



  • Collaborate with the senior pastor to resource training for staff and session meetings.
  • Oversee staff and budget for Adult Discipleship, Missions, Evangelism and Equipping ministries. Provide creative and strategic leadership, guidance and support to the staff and ministry teams in these areas. Collaborate with ministry team staff members and other resources to teach classes and develop programs that engage, equip and empower growth and ministry in these areas.
  • Work with the Senior Pastor, LEAD Team, elders, and Vision Team in an advisory role to develop Trinity vision and ministry guidelines and make recommendations for directional changes.
  • Serve as a teaching elder representative for Trinity by joining with other churches in our presbytery/denomination to achieve ECO’s missional goals



The person in this position will be expected to have previously embraced the essential tenets and confessional standards of Christian faith as delineated in our denomination’s key statements on polity and ordination.* This includes a personal belief in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Knowledge of the Bible is assumed, and a demonstrably Christian lifestyle appropriate.  It is expected that the person conforms to the ordination standards of our denomination.

Provide Christ-centered and creative leadership and guidance to staff, ministry teams and congregation in mobilizing the Trinity community

Develop, plan and teach biblically-based adult classes and programs

Interpret the biblical, theological and strategic nature of God’s activity in the world, Trinity’s partnership efforts, and the mission work of the Church

Learn the organization, operations, programs and activities of the Church

Direct, manage, and develop administrative and program staff members

Manage personnel and program budgets

Communicate effectively both orally and in writing

Participate in developing and promoting the strategic priorities, vision and direction for the Church

Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others

Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action

Work comfortably, effectively and efficiently in formal and informal settings

Work independently with little direction

Plan and organize work

Maintain records and files



Any combination equivalent to:  graduation from a recognized seminary and ordination as a minister of the Word and Sacrament and at least five years of ministry experience



Valid California driver’s license




Church and office environment

Driving a vehicle to conduct work

Evening and variable hours


Hearing and speaking to exchange information, preach and make presentations.

Seeing to read materials

Sitting or standing for extended periods of time


TIME FRAME: It is anticipated that this position would be necessary for 12-18 months. It can be ended with 60 days’ notice by either party.
