We are College Church, in Northampton, Massachusetts, and we are seeking a pastor – perhaps you?
First, a bit about where we live: Hampshire County is part of the Pioneer Valley, or the “Happy Valley”, in western Massachusetts, with a population of approximately 160,000 people nestled along the Connecticut River. Founded in 1662, Hampshire County is
home to mountains and farms, a mix of suburban and rural, and the nationally known Five College Consortium. Our community is liberal in politics, and diverse in religious thought. Northampton and the surrounding towns offer numerous outlets for events and
interests, including craft fairs, festivals, cultural celebrations, hobbies, and athletics, particularly cycling. The PVTA interconnects the towns and colleges with regular bus services. And recently, high-speed rail service began in the Valley, connecting
Northampton with the larger communities to the north and south.
College Church was founded in 1972, meeting in the former Northampton School for girls, which we soon after purchased and still call home. In our early years a significant part of our membership came from the local colleges, although that is no longer the
case. We are blessed with excellent and flexible facilities. Our sanctuary is a gymnasium, with architecture well suited for worship as well as basketball. We have two kitchens, several classrooms, a large library, and a small theater room. In addition to
the main building, we have two houses converted for outreach and into offices. We are positioned within walking distance of Northampton’s numerous eateries/shops and the Smith College campus, yet are surrounded by tree lined grass fields providing space for
outdoors sports, picnics, and occasional services. Could you get excited about developing this facility in ways to serve and love our community?
We are on a journey as an interdenominational church that sits in the middle of a diverse culture with perspectives and opinions that should bring us, as followers of Christ, to healthy dialog. Small groups are a pivotal component of our growth as individual
disciples. And we at College Church love our little ones – the children. There is a refreshing new sense of joy as more kids come to hear the gospel and participate in our church family. Our Sunday School is fully staffed with a volunteer team of capable
and creative teachers and mentors – could you get excited about growing these families both now and through the years?
College Church is currently a community of approximately 200 members and regular attenders, with a long tradition of missions and service; our commitment remains strong to support missionaries, both foreign and domestic, and serve the poor and the homeless
through local outreach such as our Gap program. Could you get excited about dreaming with us as we seek to continue being a missions community?
College Church has come through a recent period of struggle in which about a third of our family left. With the help of an Intentional Interim Pastor, we now find ourselves to be a sharply unified congregation who are loving each other and Jesus with a deeper
measure of authenticity. We are growing communally as followers of Christ, humbled by our inadequacies, accepting our differences, forgiving others and asking forgiveness, while always gathering to worship our Lord together. We are maturing in a most wonderful
and gentle way – could you get excited about harnessing this momentum for the glory of God’s kingdom?
We are hungry for quality preaching that connects with where we live and the issues we face, stimulating dialog to help us to understand Scripture and the things we wrestle with in our jobs and our neighborhoods.
Could you get excited about guiding us, opening the scriptures to us, bringing us to the table to talk, and shepherding us as we live out the gospel together?
