Senior Pastor Job Description

I. Mission

The Senior Pastor is to love, lead and feed God’s people by godly modeling, by serving as the primary preaching pastor, by prayerfully initiating innovative visionary direction, by providing supervisory leadership and accountability to the church staff, and by providing pastoral care.

 

II. Requirements

    1. He must meet the biblical qualifications listed in 1 Timothy 3:2-7 and Titus 1:5-9.

    2.He must be a good example of a godly servant-leader and maintain proper motives in his ministry. 1Peter 5:1-4)

    3.He must be gifted by God to fulfill his leadership role as a pastor-teacher who is seeking to equip the saints for service. (Ephesians 4:11-12)  Above all, he must deeply love God and sincerely cultivate his relationship with the Lord. (Mark 12:30; John 15:4-5; 21:15-17)

 

III. Relationships

  1. He shall serve as a pastor-elder on the Elder Board and submit to a spirit of mutual accountability while serving as a shepherd to the shepherds (elders). The Senior Pastor shall be subordinate to the Elder Board.  The Elder Board shall evaluate the performance of the Senior Pastor and review his compensation package on an annual basis.
  2. He shall exercise a primary, executive leadership role along with the lay elders in selecting both support staff and ministry staff.
  3. He shall be responsible for oversight of the ministry staff of the church, seeking to guide, to evaluate, and to help them fulfill their areas of responsibility.
  4. He shall provide guidance for the creation, oversight, and/or continuation of all church committees or task forces in a way that will best serve the effective advancement of Northwest Hills’ purposes.
  5. He shall provide direction as he works with the Elder Board and the Church Administrator on budgeting.
  6. He shall serve as an evaluator, refiner, and encourager of the various church ministries.
  7. He shall provide oversight for and work closely with the Minister of Worship (or volunteer worship assistants) to plan and give visionary oversight to the direction and flow of worship services.

IV. Responsibilities

  1. Preaching, Teaching, and Leadership Development.  i. Oversee Sunday morning worship services and deliver (or assign) Sunday morning messages.  ii. Take the lead in planning celebration of the Lord’s Supper, baptism and special services.  iii. Guide the Elders with biblical instruction.  iv. Facilitate the training and development of men for church leadership.
  2. Prayer.  i. Ensure that prayer is maintained as a high priority in the church.  ii. Lead the Elders and staff to constantly seek God.
  3. Shepherding.  i. Evangelism: 1. Conduct pulpit and personal evangelism.  2. Promote evangelism emphasis throughout church ministries.  3. Promote baptism; meet with candidates (or assign a staff Pastor to do so).  4. Support with enthusiasm the church commitment to local and international missions.  ii. Assimilation: 1. Oversee newcomer follow-up processes and procedures. 2. Promote membership.  iii. Care: 1. Provide for Pastoral counseling as needed. (Refer to outside counseling as needed.)  2. Provide oversight for Christian weddings, baby dedications, grief counseling, and funerals. (Personally perform, conduct, or assign.)Supervise church body restoration, discipline, and conflict resolution.  3. Provide leadership in the area of pastoral care for the sick and needy; leadership may involve both personal, direct care and providing encouragement and motivation to others in the body to provide such care.
  4. Equipping and Overseeing: i. Elders - 1. Function as a visionary, help establish goals, and develop long-range planning.  2. Guide the Lay Elders in direction setting, staff decisions, and ministry strategies in a biblical way that implements the philosophy and purposes of Northwest Hills. 3. Work with the Elder Board chairman to establish an agenda for monthly meeting.  4. Meet as needed with Lay Elder leadership.  ii. Staff - 1. Lead the Lay Elders in the hiring, directing, and evaluating of all staff.  2. Exercise direct line authority over all staff. Establish and maintain a clear, effective chain of command.  3. Delegate authority, accountability, and responsibility in a way that best provides for effective ministry in a large church setting. 4. Lead or assign the leadership for regular all-staff coordination/communication meetings. 5. Meet with pastoral staff on a regular basis for evaluation, prayer, and planning.  6. Hold the staff accountable for effective ministry.  iii. Other areas - 1. Support church involvement in Church of the Valley, the Corvallis CitiChurch, and Love INC.
