Job Description:



McCabe United Methodist Church is a dynamic, growing congregation of nearly 1,000 members in the expanding community of Bismarck, North Dakota. This new, full-time staff position will team with the Senior Pastor, along with other staff members, to dream and deploy McCabe's future plans to make new disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. (The Director of Discipleship will report first to the Senior Pastor, then to the McCabe Leadership Team.)


Requirements for Application



  • Professes Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior

  • Full engagement in active Christian lifestyle and discipleship, including weekly worship attendance, small group participation, lifestyle of tithing and generosity, and serving out of call and giftedness (if laity, membership at McCabe will be required)

  • Commitment to personal, spiritual growth and healthy lifestyle

  • Considers this position a ministry calling, not simply a job

  • Is in full alignment with / support of the vision of McCabe United Methodist Church

  • Models standards and expectations of Christian leadership, including positivity and professionalism 

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree

  • Prefer experience in recruiting, training, and deploying unpaid teams for mission and ministry

  • Leadership and capabilities showing effectiveness in supervision, coaching, and evaluation of others as needed

  • Passion for and ability to create a discipleship strategy that includes curriculum choices, identification and training of leaders, creation of new material as needed, integrating media and technology as needed

  • Ability to effectively create and implement methods of ministry including people, resources, and budgets

Leadership Skills:

  • Ability to work in a team-based, strengths-based environment

  • Attention to detail, self-starter, commitment to excellence

  • Responsive to the needs of staff and congregation

  • Work as an agent of change, not a guardian of the status quo

  • Effectiveness at coaching, encouraging and challenging paid staff and unpaid leaders for next levels of leadership and contribution

Desired Outcomes:

  • Creation and implementation of an intentional discipleship pathway for people of all ages; the pathway would have as its goal greater spiritual maturity and more in-depth involvement in local and international missions

  • Increased numbers of McCabe attendees engaged in the discipleship pathway

  • Improved and growing maturity among paid staff as they creatively expand and improve McCabe's discipleship pathway

  • Increasing the number and multiplication of small groups and affinity groups for the purpose of accountability, discipleship, relational care, and mission

  • Systematic and effective leadership, supervision, goal setting, accountability, and evaluation of paid discipleship staff if/when in supervisory role

  • United Methodist background is not required, but the successful candidate must be in agreement with the standards, theology, and policy of The United Methodist Church
