Job Description:

The City

Missoula is the second largest city in the state of Montana with approximately 75,000 people in the immediate vicinity and 100,000 if you include the surrounding areas.  It also happens to be the center of the outdoor recreation universe.  If you love fishing, hunting, skiing, boarding, sledding, swimming, camping, hiking, hang-gliding, rafting, or floating, you will find ample opportunity in the countless mountains, lakes, rivers, creeks, and forests that surround our area.  There is something to do outside every season of the year.  While the city is definitely marked by the outdoor recreation culture, it is shaped even more so by the increasingly secular humanistic worldview espoused by the one and only University of Montana located here.   No one seems to be able to give an accurate (or even consistent) accounting of our demographics, but it seems that only 10% of the population attends church and less than 5% are what one might call a biblical Christian. Needless to say, there is much opportunity here for preaching the Gospel and making disciples.

The Church

Meadowview is a biblically faithful congregation with approximately 550 people in attendance each weekend.  We are made up of a lot of young families (and young Christians), but oddly, we are seeing an increase in the older crowd despite the young pastor and loud music.  The preaching is expository with the occasional detour into a topical (but still exegetical) series.  We joke around and have a good time but still preach about Hell, sin, the Cross, biblical sexual ethics, the exclusivity of Christ and a host of other wildly popular topics.  We are elder led. We baptize people after they have personally professed faith in Christ. We are modern in our worship style.  We love the Gospel.

The Position

Up to this point, we’ve been asking a lady in the church to work part time, overseeing approximately 160 kids and 100 volunteers in addition to doing background checks, meeting with parents, and providing biblically sound curriculum.  She is doing a killer job, but needless to say, she’s a bit overwhelmed.  Our solution is to look for a fulltime (45-50 hours/week) pastor to lock arms with us and take our kid’s ministry to the next level.

Our philosophy is that the responsibility to disciple children, rests primarily with the parents, not with the church.  As such, we want a kid’s ministry that compliments what the parents are teaching at home.  The only problem with that philosophy is that many of our parents are great people but are not clear on how to make disciples out of the five and eight year olds staring at them from across the dinner table.  So that means this job will be a mix of discipling kids and discipling parents to disciple kids.  This will involve creating modern, engaging worship and teaching experiences for kids on Sunday morning that are Gospel-centered instead of man-centered.  It will also include setting up regular parent training opportunities, recommending biblically sound books for parents, and maybe even starting that epic parenting blog you’ve been dreaming about.  If you wanted a rough breakdown of what work in a typical month will look like, this seems reasonable:

50% - Recruit and equip the saints to labor faithfully in our kid’s ministry (Birth – 5th grade)

25% - Equip the parents for the ministry of parenting

15% - Find biblical curriculum for the four to ten year-olds

10% - Counsel parents and kids (yep, we’re going to make you actually pastor people)

The Person

We have a philosophy of not settling, so if we can’t find the right person, we will make do with the present setup and leave the position vacant.   It’s better to have no person than the wrong person.  At minimum, you need a bachelor’ degree, but we will give strong preference to a master’s degree.  We like education around here, so the more degrees and certifications the merrier.  One of those degrees needs to be a Bible degree, and you will want to talk about whether you agree with the general stance of the college/seminary you attended.  For instance, if you went to some Bible-hating school but decided that God is a more competent Author than your professors told you, you will want to note that somewhere.  You will need training in NOUTHETIC counseling or a willingness to get certified up to CDC level 3 from http://www.ibcd.org/cdc/.  You will also need a proven track record of faithfulness and competence, so you need at least three years of experience in kid’s ministry or family ministry.  You need to be humble, organized, able to adapt, humble, able to define your own goals, resourceful, humble, a loather of laziness, and humble.

The Application

(LOOK OUT! THIS IS A TEST!) In order to apply, do not just hit the “submit résumé” button on the website.  (WARNING! YOU ARE BEING TESTED RIGHT NOW!)  Instead, email brad@meadowviewchurch.org with the words “Family and Kids Pastor Position” and your current city in the subject line along with these items atached:

- A definition of the Gospel in less than 100 words

- Your résumé with a cover letter

- Your conversion story

- Your spouse’s conversion story (if you’re married, that is)

- Your philosophy of ministry

- Audio or video of you preaching, teaching, or training if you’ve got it

- You salary requirements and earliest moving date

Because of the volume of résumés we get when we post jobs here, we will only be able to respond to potential candidates.  If we think you could be a potential candidate, we will shoot you an email asking for more info within ten work days.  Don’t worry, we will watch the junk mail folder just in case the computer thinks your email address is shady.

We are praying for God to bring His best pastor for us, as well as open the door for you all to find the ministry God has designed you to serve.  The harvest is plentiful, so we are praying for laborers in all the churches.  Soli Deo Gloria!
