First Congregational Church of Benton Harbor, located in Benton Harbor, MI in partnership with Trinity United Church of Christ and the Michigan Conference of United Church of Christ is seeking a church planning pastor who will plant a sister church in this developing community.    During the preparation and launch phase, the Church Planting pastor will build and develop a launch team, launch the church, and lead as the lead pastor and primary teaching pastor.



The ideal ordained minister and candidate will have:

1)      A radical commitment to the supremacy of Jesus Christ

2)      A strong calling for church planting

3)      A passion for reaching the un-churched

4)      A strong gift for preaching and teaching

5)      Demonstrated success in leading and building ministry

6)      Entrepreneurial aptitude and creativity

7)      Theological clarity (Masters degree in Ministry or Theology preferred)

8)      UCC ordained, licensed on commissioned preferred

9)      Appreciative Inquiry Mindset


Primary Areas of Responsibility

  • Lead and shepherd in partnership and collaboration with TUCC and The Michigan Conference of UCC
  • Encourage and shepherd the spiritual formation of the church plant as the lead teacher and communicator
  • Collaboratively develop, nurture and communicate the vision and ministry strategy of church plant with leadership and congregation
  • Lead the church plant leadership team to develop strategic plans and yearly ministry action plans to accomplish church plant’s mission
  • Learn and develop in leadership development and deployment
  • Build and develop a church planting launch team
  • Partner with, oversee, develop, shepherd and manage the church plant leadership team to be effective spiritual leaders and servants
  • Champion leadership development and develop and implement a church-wide leadership development plan
  • Partner with Worship Team to develop weekend worship services
  • Partner with the Senior Pastor or his designee to oversee Newcomer welcome and assimilation process ensuring that new people to Trinity are fully integrated into the body of Christ
  • Assist in creating or revamping the New Member classes and process
  • Develop and lead team to provide initial contact and follow up to visitors and new attendees
  • Lead and serve in a spirit of Love and Excellence, collaboration and cooperation with Senior Pastor and his designee, Michigan Conference, Pastoral Relations Committee and Executive Leadership Team
  • Provide pastoral care to members, visitors and guests
  • Officiate weddings, funerals and baptisms as requested
  • Execute other pastoral duties (preach, sacraments, etc) as assigned
