Associate Youth Director (Full-Time)

Buncombe Street United Methodist Church – Greenville, SC



Job Responsibilities:     

Technology, Social Media, and Communication:

  • Create Annual Opening Kickoff promotional materials to inform families and summarize yearly schedule.

  • Utilize social media to stay connected with students and their families.

  • Utilize computer presentation programs such as ProPresenter for worship and education as well as organizational software programs like Planning Center Online.

  • Contribute articles, pictures, and videos to all forms of church media, celebrating Youth Ministries.

  • Compose weekly e-newsletter for students and their families.


Worship Experience:

  • Assist in capturing the attention and hearts of youth during all worship experiences.

  • Assist in seeking out and coordinating opportunities for youth involvement in existing worship services.

  • Assist in identifying and/or creating unique worship experiences to address the specific interests and schedules of the youth.

  • Assist in ensuring the beliefs expressed are consistent with the core beliefs of Christianity and the doctrine of the United Methodist Church.


Youth Relationships:

In coordination with the Youth Director:

  • Create regular activities, both inside and outside of the church, to allow for the development of open and trusting relationships - both with youth members and non-members.

  • Emphasize and oversee small groups within the context of the Youth Ministry.

  • Encourage youth to bring friends to activities with “no strings attached.”

  • Seek out opportunities within the Safe Sanctuaries guidelines to “hang out” with kids on campus, at sporting events, hospital visits, or in the community.  

  • Provide a loving and grace-filled place for youth to share their questions, concerns and beliefs, and to encourage/develop their individual faith journeys.

  • Identify leadership skills among youth participants and encourage/develop those skills.


Parent and Guardian Relationships:

In coordination with the Youth Minister:

  • Recruit, equip and shepherd a team of parent and volunteer leaders to minister to the needs of students, particularly within the context of Youth Worship.

  • Create avenues of consistent contact with parents (regular e-newsletters, annual parent meetings, etc.)

  • Become aware of and support the needs of the parents as it relates to providing a solid environment for the youth.


  • Assists Youth Director in establishing and maintaining the Youth Ministries budget.  

  • Assists Youth Director in organizing and carrying out periodic large group events and seasonal retreats.  

  • Assists Youth Director in tracking weekly attendance at all events.  

  • Recruits, screens, selects, trains, schedules, and supports all volunteers and lay leaders in youth worship activities.

  • Maintains an active presence in all worship services to encourage youth worship.

  • Coordinates with the Church Administrator to identify and mitigate potential liability for Church facilities, property, members, volunteers, community members and staff involved in youth worship activities.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Christian Education or related field.

  • Minimum of three years experience in student ministry and worship.

  • Experience with Youth Education and Leisure Ministry programming.

  • Fluency with the United Methodist doctrine.

  • Demonstrated experience developing trusting, open relationships with youth and their parents/guardians.

  • Proficient with technology.

  • Music background and/or ability preferred.

  • A clear testimony of faith in Jesus Christ and a growing, thriving personal relationship with Him.



  • Expected annual salary range - $30,000+
