The Village Community Presbyterian Church






  1. I.                   PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

Provides professional leadership for the music program of the church, assisting people through music in their desire to follow Jesus for life.  The Director of Music Ministries is also responsible for the leadership and development of the Chancel Choir’s participation in all traditional worship services, church concerts, and additional opportunities that may present themselves.   She/he shall have a passion for traditional choral music but also have an openness to all forms of music.


The Director of Music Ministries shall be a member of the program staff, accountable to the Head of Staff, and under the direct supervision of the Associate Pastor of Worship and Arts. She/he is responsible to the Session through its Worship and Arts Commission in matters of program and through its Support Commission in matters of compensation and performance review.



Church Music Program


  • Develops the overall vision and direction for the church’s music program with the Head of Staff and Associate Pastor of Worship and Arts
  • Recommends the employment of the directors of other music ensembles, the church organist, choir section leaders, vocal soloists, and instrumentalists as needed to support the choral program
  • Supervises all music staff of the church
  • Develops, recommends, and administers the annual music budget
  • Oversees all choirs
  • Oversees and coordinates programming for all choirs, including scheduling and facilities management
  • Sustains and organizes a library that represents a wide range of choral literature.
  • Oversees the development, maintenance, and inventory of all music supplies, including robes, instruments, and equipment
  • Attends meetings of the Worship and Arts Commission and other scheduled program meetings, as required
  • Serves as music consultant to other ministries of the church as needed


Music Outreach and Music Ministry Programs


  • Develops music outreach programs and works in conjunction with other commissions
  • Creates and/or oversees special music groups including but not limited to choral and instrumental ensembles  
  • Creates and/or oversees Concert Series sponsored by The Village Church
  • Creates and/or oversees new music ministries for church youth
  • Gives leadership to and conducts as required special music events, such as recitals and concerts


Chancel Choir/Traditional Music Programs

  • Coordinates all music presentations with the Pastors for each traditional worship service
  • Recruits, trains, prepares, and directs the Chancel Choir in the traditional worship services of the church
  • Oversees all special music presentations (solos, groups, special concerts) for traditional worship services and special concerts
  • Oversees all other traditional choirs
  • Provides professional, artistic, administrative, and spiritual support to all persons involved in the music ministries of the church
  • Provides opportunities for the Chancel Choir to sing at outside events for the purpose of growth and outreach
  • Creates and supports various choral and instrumental ensembles, including youth and children
  • Provides for recruiting, training, preparing and directing hand bell Choir(s)

Worship Band/Contemporary Worship

  • Oversees and works alongside the Director of Contemporary Music to develop and enhance contemporary worship ministries
  • Serves as the liaison between the worship band team and Pastors for contemporary worship
  • Provides guidance for artistic license to Contemporary worship leader
  • Helps coordinate music selections and special musical guests
  • Gives direction and supports development of outreach for Contemporary Worship opportunities 


  • Strong pastoral and spiritual commitment to Jesus Christ with a deep desire to lead others in worship
  • Strong pastoral skills in leading the Church’s music community  
  • Bachelor’s degree in music; preferably with an advanced degree and academic training in choral and instrumental conducting
  • Five years of experience conducting church choral music preferred  
  • Extensive knowledge of church music literature, while giving effect to a Reformed orientation in choir music and hymns
  • Ability to conduct major choral works with orchestra
  • Excellent interpersonal and teaching skills with attention to detail
