Position Title:  Lead Pastor



Principal Function

I Timothy 3:1-7, Ephesians 4:11-12 and Titus 1 give the basic guidelines for the Lead Pastor to be the spiritual leader of the church.   The Lead Pastor, called and led by the Holy Spirit, provides leadership to First Baptist Church, casting vision to uniquely fulfill God's purposes for the church.  Chief among his responsibilities are proclaiming of the gospel, teaching the truth of the Bible, and equipping believers to become spiritually mature  and devoted followers of Jesus Christ.  The Lead Pastor must have a heart and passion for the lost, and believe in the power of the gospel to transform lives.



The Lead Pastor at First Baptist Georgetown

  • Will have previous experience in a Baptist church setting that enables him to lead a growing church
  • Will have a degree from an accredited seminary


Specific List of Responsibilities

The Lead Pastor at First Baptist Georgetown will

  • *Function as the chief administrator for the total church program providing oversight and supervision of the church staff in accordance with the Organization Chart of staff leadership
  • Develop a plan for preaching that is focused on the gospel, promoting spiritual maturity, and equipping members for evangelism
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate a plan to equip church members, using their spiritual gifts and skills, for ministries in the church or community
  • Lead high quality, relevant worship services, proclaiming the gospel through Bible-based sermons applicable to modern life and leading worshippers into an awareness of God's presence in their midst
  • Plan, coordinate and evaluate congregational services to appeal to a multigenerational congregation
  • Preach in all worship services or arrange for someone else to preach when appropriate by cultivating a preaching team from staff members.
  • Recommend and advise on the selection of all staff members and in determining their duties as stated in the By-Laws of the church
  • Provide or designate leadership in the observance of church ordinances.
  • Lead staff members in promoting the entire ministry plan of FBCgT
  • Counsel with and assist in training deacons and ministry leaders for their responsibilities
  • Serve as ex-officio member to all church committees or appoint another staff member to serve
  • Exercise strong communication skills and is approachable and relational to his staff and congregation
  • Believes in the active role of the Holy Spirit in conviction of sin, sanctification, giving of gifts and empowerment of the believer to live the Christian life
  • Build and sustain a culture of unity, teamwork and collaboration with staff members and the congregation
  • Promotes a missional focus out of Biblical conviction and a love for those who do not know Christ. 


Other General Responsibilities

The Lead Pastor at First Baptist Georgetown will

  • Participate in denominational and civic opportunities that are consistent with the purpose of the church
  • Utilize the services of the secretarial and facilities staff, which are consistent with their Position Descriptions
  • Give full support to the General Operating Budget of FBC and avoid soliciting or expending funds not previously authorized
  • Participate in mission trips and continuing education opportunities when possible
  • Utilize an annual study leave to prepare for church leadership and preaching responsibilities for the following year
  • *Prepare and conduct annual performance evaluations for the Executive Staff in accordance with the church's Personnel Policies and Procedures.


Basic Personal Responsibilities

The Lead Pastor at First Baptist Georgetown will

  • Maintain a healthy and God-honoring balance in his personal, family and ministry responsibilities.
  • Demonstrates the heart of a shepherd, characterized by humility, love and grace
  • Maintain a vital and growing personal walk with the Lord through committed Bible study, prayer, meditation, fellowship, worship, and other disciplines
  • Grow personally through the study of the Word, keeping current with trends in evangelicalism and awareness of cultural trends
  • Provide spiritual leadership of his home and family, and involves his family in church life. He has a godly, loyal, and committed wife who is supportive of her husband, his ministry, and his calling to FBCgT
  • Possess a high level of self-awareness, ability to understand one's strength and opportunities for improvement
  • Develop personal evangelism opportunities within and outside the church
  • He will financially support the works of FBCgT by faithfully giving at least 10% of his gross income and by maintaining wise stewardship measures over the remaining 90%
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Church
