The community that we are in:
Bethel church in Richland, Washington, has experienced dramatic growth over the last twenty years. Its purpose statement is simply “to make disciples.” In recent years, Bethel has utilized a multi-campus model in order to make disciples in the greater eastern
Washington area. One of those campuses is in the small town of Prosser.
Prosser is a town of 5,000 people, located about 30 minutes from the Tri-cities and another 40 minutes from Yakima. It is in the lower “Valley,” the name that locals have given to this fertile land that is dotted with small towns and stretches from just
west of the Tri-cities to Yakima.
Prosser and the Valley are well known for their productive agricultural base but Prosser is increasingly becoming known for its wine industry and beautiful wineries. The people love their town and their way of life. The area is very conservative in its outlook
on life and in its politics.
People of Hispanic origin are a big part of the Valley. Primarily from Mexico, Hispanic people came to work in the agricultural industry. Some families have been in the Valley for generations and are now working in virtually every industry and are a part
of the fabric of the area.
The Valley at one time was filled with churches that played a major role in people’s lives. Unfortunately their influence has waned and many people consider them irrelevant to life today. Many of the societal struggles that have been associated with inner
city life have become a part of daily life in this part of small town America.
The person that we need:
The Lord has led Bethel to the lower Valley to make disciples, build His church and influence the communities there with the truth of His word. Toward that end, we have built a new facility in Prosser that is strategically located on 25 acres, has freeway
access and is on the main road coming into town. The Prosser elder board has stated that this is “A church for the whole Valley.”
A crucial part of Bethel’s work is to have the right person leading the church in Prosser. Some key elements we believe the right person must have in order to effectively lead the church would be:
- Have a passion for the Valley, be willing to live there and become a part of the community.
- Demonstrate love to people of all stripes, including the wealthy and the poor, business owners and field workers, English and Spanish speakers.
- Thrive in a multi-campus strategy, effectively utilizing the many resources available.
- Effectively communicate Bethel’s vision to staff and the congregation, encouraging and equipping them to be disciples and make disciples.
- Have the ability to lead a staff and oversee ministries.
