Job Description:

Shades Mountain Independent Church is a non-denominational, elder-led church located in Birmingham, Alabama. We are a multi-generational, 500-member congregation committed to loving God with all we are, loving our neighbors with gospel intentionality, and growing together in love through Christ-centered community. We value God-exalting worship, verse-by-verse exposition of the Bible, Scripture-based prayer, life-on-life discipleship, global missions, every member a minister, and every member a missionary in our community.

We are looking for a Worship Minister who has a personal passion for worship (A Lead Worshiper), a pastoral calling to lead God's people to respond to him through Christ-centered worship (A Faithful Shepherd), and a developed ability to identify, equip, and release gifted people and teams into worship ministry (A Visionary Leader).

  • Personal: A growing relationship with Jesus Christ that is marked by personal intimacy with Christ and everyday discipleship
  • Pastoral: Fulfills the qualifications of an elder as outlined in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1
  • Doctrinal: Agreement with SMIC doctrinal statement as outlined on website
  • Education: Master of Divinity preferred but will consider candidates with Bachelor's depending upon experience and ability
  • Experience: Experience leading worship in a multi-generational setting; will have a heart for old and new, for hymns and modern worship, and will be able to lead the congregation in God-centered worship via a variety of styles
  • Skills: Able to plan and execute engaging worship services; competent vocalist and pianist or guitarist – a true musician (preferred); able to recruit and develop people, first, as disciples of Christ, and second, as fellow lead worshipers and collaborative team members; administrative and appropriate inter-personal skills
  • Technology: Working knowledge of various computer programs (we currently use Planning Center Online) and multi-media resources (sound, lighting, and video)

  • Will make the spiritual development of his family a top priority
  • Will actively invest in those directly in his care in the worship ministry; as a member of the ministerial staff, will also provide pastoral leadership and general pastoral care to the larger SMIC community
  • Will be a "good news" pastor who makes much of Jesus Christ, and will plan and execute weekly worship services that lead others to trust and treasure Jesus Christ more
  • Will execute worship services that connect with and engage people as active participants (not passive recipients of a performance); will exhibit pastoral leadership from the platform thereby actively shepherding people to see, to savor, and to sing of God's greatness and grace

  • In partnership with the Senior Pastor and other staff leaders, will contribute to the "big picture" by providing clear, compelling, visionary direction and leadership to the worship ministry and the church-at-large
  • Will be the point of contact for weekly worship services and worship-related events that fall outside normal Sunday services; will oversee the planning of services, musical selection, praise teams, musicians, choirs, scheduling, media, technology, drama, and all other creative components of the worship ministry
  • Will recruit, equip, and encourage a wide variety of gifted servants and teams – vocalists, praise teams, bands, and choir; will lead those involved in the worship ministry to embrace and execute a vision for congregational worship that exalts Jesus Christ and promotes the unity of the body
  • Will provide creative direction to stage design/layout in auditorium and other venues; will oversee the technical and media resources used by the church with attention given to the identification and training of volunteer technical personnel for audio, lighting, and media
  • Will choose songs wisely considering their content, musical accompaniment, and singability
  • Will effectively schedule, manage, and execute productive and engaging rehearsal times
  • Will seek to cultivate a new generation of lead worshipers by equipping the church's children and youth to lead in worship

  • Will coordinate and manage people and resources related to weekly worship teams and media ministry in cooperation with other staff members
  • Will meet weekly with other staff for worship planning
  • Will attend all staff meetings and be a team player who champions and owns the priorities of the whole and of ministries besides his own
  • Will prepare and execute an annual ministry plan and budget
