Job Description:

Memorial Baptist Church (Memorial) in Columbus, Indiana, seeks a full time pastor to lead our congreagtion.  A pastor who will inspire, energize, motivate and lead all to a greater faith in God.  The ideal candidate should be capable of energizing our congregation’s vision of discipleship.  He/She should embrace traditional and contemporary forms of worship, support active outreach to the greater community, and be creative in shaping our overall ministry.

Memorial is an American Baptist Church and is deeply involved in the ABC Indiana/Kentucky region activities.  Memorial  currently has a Sunday morning blended worship service and a Thursday night modern service. The ideal candidate will be an ordained minister, having a seminary degree, with at least five years ministry experience.  Ministry priorities are: Preaching; Pastoral Care; Interpreting the Faith; Church Growth and Spiritual Life Development.

Memorial is a church with 60 years of success in serving Columbus, Indiana, and its members. The church is known for its vibrant friendliness, its commitment to missions, outreach, involvement in the community, and assistance for members in need. Through all of its programs, a commitment to doing the Lord’s work in these key areas is evident. In order to understand our story, let’s first start with a little history.

Memorial was founded on August 14, 1954, as an outreach to East Columbus from First Baptist Church of Columbus. Dr. and Mrs. E.U. Wood and other members of First Baptist Church of Columbus wanted to establish an American Baptist Church in East Columbus. This vision began when Dr. and Mrs. E. U. Wood purchased three lots for the purpose of building Memorial.  Dr. Wood went to be with the Lord by the fall of 1960, and he left three-fourths of his estate to Memorial.  Memorial quickly developed its own identity and a new church building was erected with the estate left by Dr. Wood and other funds from the current congregation in 1964, where it is still located.

Vibrant, Friendly Congregation – Memorial has long been known as a place where there are no strangers. Whether it is the first time to visit the church, or you have attended the church for years, friendly, active fellowship is the norm. From the greeters and ushers available to meet you when you first walk in, to the greeting time during morning worship service, to the fellowship time with refreshments between the services, to the discussion-based Sunday School classes, Memorial strives to show Christ’s love to others.

Staunch Support of Missions – Since Memorial was started as a mission church, Memorial is mission minded.  We contribute over 18% of our budget to mission giving.  The church supports the ABC World Missions,  America For Christ, One Great Hour, and Retired Ministers and Missionary Offerings and these are over and above the 18%.  In addition, we support several local mission endeavors.. The commitment doesn’t just stop there - three mission trips involving youth and adults of Memorial to Kodiak, AK, and Tijuana, Mexico, have occurred in the past few years.  Our young people participate each year in Clean Up Columbus, from this outreach and showering of God’s generous grace to others, new families have been drawn to Memorial.  During the year various teams offer community outreach events targeted to our local neighbors.  These events are very well attended and a blessing to both those attending and serving.

Lay Leadership-Memorial has been blessed over the years with strong lay leaders.  These leaders have developed passions and excitiment for service and share that within the church walls as well as reaching out to others.

Second and Third Generation Church Family – As the congregation has matured, it has done an excellent job of retaining many of its members who attended Memorial first as children, then as parents, and even some as grandparents. In today’s transitioning population, Memorial has been blessed by multi-generational families staying at Memorial.
