Since 1733, The Congregational Church of New Canaan (CCNC) has been a place of worship for men, women, and children from a variety of religious backgrounds, occupations, and interests. Over these 281 years, the church has experienced a rich tradition of education, mission work, loving fellowship, and faithful Christian witness. CCNC is the church on the hill around which Canaan Parish was founded, and they continue to be a key part of the fabric of the town today.

Throughout their history, the church has been blessed with charismatic and inspirational leaders. They love and care for their ministers, which is evidenced by the fact that only 18 Senior Ministers have served the church since 1733.

The Senior Minister of The Congregational Church of New Canaan must be a gifted preacher and teacher, able to deliver inspirational sermons that are relevant and challenging. He or she will have proven management experience and will be able to lead a pool of highly gifted staff and volunteers. Ideally, the Senior Minister has had marketplace experience outside of ministry to give him or her an authentic foundation in relating to professionals and guiding them to connect faith with life experiences. The Senior Minister must find the study and communication of intellectual concepts enjoyable and even exhilarating, while still having an ability to warmly and sincerely engage with people.

The ideal candidate will preferably have ten years of ministry experience, not necessarily in a Senior Minister role. A college degree is required, and a graduate seminary degree is strongly preferred. The successful candidate must be a gifted preacher with a combination of theological insight and real-world experience and applicability. He or she has likely led a multi-staff team and has experience with leading and empowering members of the team. The candidate likely will have lived in a community similar to New Canaan and must be able to relate across generational, ethnic, and socio-economic lines. The Senior Minister must be a person who exemplifies and communicates both grace and truth, and the successful candidate will have a respect for the amazing history of the church with an eye toward the creating a strong and growing future.

The history of the town of New Canaan finds its roots in the history of Congregational Church, as the Canaan Parish was originally formed as a religious entity. It incorporated nearly 70 years later in 1801. Today, New Canaan is a classically charming New England town and is home to a population of nearly 20,000. In 2013, New Canaan was ranked the fifth wealthiest town in the nation on CNN Money’s list of the top-earning places in the United States. Additionally, the New Canaan Public Schools system is considered to be one of the best in Connecticut. It is a family-oriented and affluent community, with great churches, schools, parks, athletics, town-wide family activities, and a lot of civic pride.
