Assistant To The Senior Pastor


Reports To:  Senior Pastor                                                                                   Effective: 9/9/2014

Directly Supervises:  Pastoral Care Assistant

Status:  Full-Time






The Assistant to the Senior Pastor is responsible to assist the Senior Pastor through visitation, spiritual (pastoral) care, and by guiding the family, youth, and service ministries of the congregation.  It is the purpose of the Assistant to the Senior Pastor to help our congregation develop personal and corporate habits of discipleship in the areas of Christian service, family and congregational life, youth development, and the greater community.  It is the further purpose of the Assistant to the Senior Pastor to develop relationships with the people of our congregation that will foster congregational identity and spiritual growth.



v  Assist the Senior Pastor in the provision of spiritual (pastoral) care through both direct care and reporting

v  Guide the family and youth ministries of our congregation

v  Encourage and equip the service ministries of our congregation

v  Assist in the teaching ministries of this congregation


  • Assist the Senior Pastor in the provision of spiritual (pastoral) care through both direct care and reporting
  • Participate in the pastoral visitation and spiritual care of the congregation, especially in non-emergency situations
  • Provide spiritual care for the congregation’s members through home visitation and general pastoral practice
  • Visit sick, infirm, and those whose mobility prevents their regular attendance at worship
  • Provide appropriate Biblical quotation and counsel per the needs of those visited
  • Administer Holy Communion (extend the congregation’s table)
  • Help preach the Gospel
  • Refer people to the Senior Pastor whose specific spiritual and/or theological needs exceed the qualifications of the Assistant to the Senior Pastor to address
  • Guide the family and youth ministries of our congregation
  • Schedule family and youth events and obtain permissions as needed
  • Coordinate volunteers for family and youth events
  • Shepherd the families and youth of this congregation by getting to know them and being alongside them through the spiritual pilgrimage of ordinary life
  • Plan and share the leadership of regular youth meetings
  • Foster relationships of trust and mentorship with the youth of our congregation
  • Develop ministries that invite and equip parents, grandparents and mentors to be better Christian spiritual leaders and to influence those youth with whom they associate.
  • Encourage and equip the service ministries of our congregation
  • Foster a culture that values Christian service as a mark of devoted Christian discipleship
  • Facilitate relationships with community and regional service organizations and partner ministries
  • Plan and facilitate the planning of Christian service opportunities
  • Work closely with the Mission and Ministries, Evangelism, Junior High, Senior High, and Christ’s Kids Committees in the implementation of our ministry programs
  • Relate to, guide, and foster ministries of Christian fellowship in the congregation
  • Develop and equip lay leaders in the areas of family faith formation, youth ministries, and service



  • Pray for and with the members of this congregation
  • Help foster a culture of unalloyed devotion to Christ and sacrificial discipleship
  • Bring to the Senior Pastor’s attention resources that can be used in the mission of the congregation
  • Evaluate and utilize resources for spiritual formation
  • Assess the spiritual needs of youth, families, and opportunities for Christian service and provide programming recommendations for Senior Pastor and Council
  • Carry out other tasks as assigned by the Senior Pastor
  • Teach theology or Bible studies as appropriate to general duties



  • Strong, orthodox Christian faith commitment and ability to articulate this faith
  • An educational background or experience in Christian theology, care giving, and faith formation
  • Preferred educational backgrounds would include an undergraduate degree in theology or ministry, license in youth and/or family ministries, Master of Arts in Religion, or a Master of Divinity.



  • Ability to work with basic modern communication tools; email, telephone, voice mail, etc.
  • Ability to  perform routine physical tasks
  • Ability to visit people in their homes

  • Initiative: Enjoys working hard; is action      oriented and energetic about worthwhile activities; not fearful of taking      calculated risks; seizes opportunities; sets demanding but achievable      objectives for self and others.
  • Motivating      Others: Creates a      climate in which people want to do their best; can motivate employees,      volunteers and members; empowers others; invites shared input and decision      making; makes each individual feel that his/her work is important.

  • Helping      Orientation;      Demonstrates concern for and attends to the needs of the congregation's      internal and external constituents ; projects a sense of empathy and      understanding when dealing with members and friends of the congregation;      is able and willing to supply answers and resources that others finds      satisfying.
  • Social      Witness:      Demonstrates a personal conviction of the Biblical standards of truth and      justice; leads the congregation in its articulation of a social witness;      advocates on behalf of the marginalized and the disenfranchised;      encourages and exhorts others to do the same; encourages the development      of congregational programs and ministries that allow the congregation to live      out its social witness.
