Director of Youth and Family Ministries

The full-time Director of Youth and Family  engage youth and families in the lifelong process of discipleship through Christian Education, Fellowship, Social Ministry, Community Outreach and Worship.  S/he will have a minimum of Bachelor’s degree in religion, education or related field, previous experience working with children and a solid grounding in Lutheran theology, ideally with specific training in Christian education within the Lutheran context. S/he will model a healthy life style for our families.  The ability to sing and/or play a musical instrument is helpful, as is current technologies.  The positive attributes of the Director are team spirit, self-motivation, enthusiasm, creativity, organization, maturity and the ability to take initiative and delegate responsibilities. 


Duties and Responsibilities


Christian Education

  • Facilitate faith formation both in church and home settings.
  • Offer instruction and guidance to strengthen parents’ faith.
  • Promote and engage youth and families in conversation, prayer, Bible reading, education, worship, fellowship and service.
  • Work with the Pastor to research, choose and implement curriculum for Christian Education program for preschool through 5th grade (WOW!), FaithWalk (Confirmation), and SHINE! (high school). 
  • identify and coordinate volunteer teams

  • Work with the Pastor to research, choose and implement curriculum for Vacation Bible School




  • Plan fellowship activities for WOW!, FaithWalk, and SHINE!
  • Plan inter-generational activities and offer parent-youth activities that strengthen parent-youth relationships.
  • Work with the Pastor and Director of Music to identify opportunities for children and families to serve during worship.
  • Develop social media distance ministry for college students.


Social Ministry/Community Outreach

  • Identify and coordinate intergenerational service events.
  • Plan and coordinate mission trips.
  • Identify and support candidates for Leadership Lab.
  • Coordinate  participation in the ELCA Tri-annual Youth Gathering.
  • Identify and implement fundraising opportunities.
  • Serve as a liaison between the congregation and outreach groups within the church.




  • Identify and coordinate nursery attendants.





  • Follow-up with visitors and new members with children.
  • Follow-up with inactive or low-attending WOW, FaithWalk and SHINE! participants.
  • Communicate educational, fellowship and service activities to both members and non-members via appropriate communication vehicles.
  • Supervise and update Youth and Family areas of the website, updating content.
  • Use social media to promote programs, maintain contact with absentees, and share information



  • Develop and maintain budget for Youth and Family Ministries.
  • Maintain program records.
  • Initiate and attend monthly Youth and Family Committee meeting.
  • Write Youth and Family section of the St. Mark Annual Meeting report.
  • Attend staff meetings.



This position works under the supervision of the Pastor and in conjunction with the St. Mark Council Youth and Family representative.
