Job Description:

Parkway Presbyterian Church’s mission is to proclaim of the gospel of Jesus Christ through Parkway's vision which is “to see all people become fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ by: connecting with God; growing in His Word, and serving the world in Jesus' name”.  Our hope in all worship services is to simply glorify God, by reaching out with God's love in the context of a community being transformed by God's Spirit.


Position Scope:

The Director of Music and Worship should be committed to the Lord Jesus, and have a passion for worship. They should possess a vision for worship and the ability to express that vision. He/she should have pastoral sense for mentoring and developing worship leadership and gifts in others.   The Director will assume the overall responsibility for our music and worship ministries with the specific intent to equip and shepherd our musicians and vocalists, through guiding and supporting the worship planning process.  This position reports directly to the Senior Pastor. 


Core Skillset:

The Director should be highly trained and skilled in music, with demonstrated ability in preferably more than one instrument (i.e., piano, guitar, etc.) as well as adept vocal skill/knowledge, and should have experience in leading a Praise Team/Band, as well as a Traditional Choir.  He/she should be familiar with AV, sound, and music multimedia programs and equipment.  He/she should demonstrate the ability to lead various types of Christian music, and be able to successfully work within a dynamic team environment.   



Under the supervision of the Senior Pastor, the Director’s main responsibilities are: (but not limited to)

  • Lead and coordinate the planning, rehearsing and implementating of both Contemporary and Traditional Worship and Music ministries (not limited to Sundays worship services only)
  • Schedule, organize and direct instrumentalists/band members, and choir and vocalists for weekly rehearsals (separate contemporary and traditional service rehearsals weekly, and pre-service rehearsals on Sundays.)
  • Plan and implement special music programs (i.e. Christmas Season, Holy Week, Wednesday Night Hymn Sings, etc.) on an ongoing basis
  • Recruit and audition incoming musicians and vocalists (ongoing)
  • Coordinate with Audio/Visual Team on issues related to worship service needs, and prepare Contemporary music projection content for worship songs (ProPresenter)
  • Take an active role and interest in the discipleship and spiritual growth of volunteers in the music program through devotionals, bible studies and teaching
  • Support the Youth music programs as needed
  • Support the Children’s Department and Director of Children’s Music as needed
  • Develop and implement the needs of a yearly budget in conjunction with Finance and Music Elder
  • Attend and participate as a member of the Worship Board, and attend weekly Staff meetings and events
  • Oversee and maintain, care and tracking of equipment, music, technology, instruments and other ministry property

 Core Competencies:



This person should exhibit strong organizational, administrative, fiscal, management and team leadership skills.  In consultation with the pastor and the music elder, capture a vision and philosophy of utilizing music in worship that is harmonious with a Christian congregation.  The Music Director should be able to lead and direct volunteers who participate in the worship services for the church.   The Music Director should develop a long-range worship plan in collaboration with the senior pastor, and establish standards for worship activities.



This person should guide and oversee the worship planning process, with the Pastor’s guidance.   He/she should establish standards for worship activities and oversee evaluation against those standards to identify progress in achieving the vision.   He/she should work with Youth Director and Director of Children’s Music Ministry to create a worship culture and worship leader opportunities in which youth and/or children may participate. 



The Director should maintain accountability for the worship philosophy and vision of each service by providing prayer support, credible feedback and mentoring where needed to worship/music members. He/she should identify, encourage and integrate worshipers’ musical gifts into worship and special event services, and maintain a ministry of encouragement to all who offer themselves in the various areas of music ministry.  He/she should identify and attend with others, as appropriate, seminars and conferences on worship leadership.
