Director of Student Ministries (Middle School and High School)

Job Description

To provide leadership to a comprehensive youth ministry program for Middle School and High School students. To reach students where they are, and help them become more fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ.

The position is accountable to the Steering Team through the Head of Staff and Personnel Team.

  • Possess a strong personal faith relationship with Jesus Christ, and live for Him with commitment and passion.

  • At least an undergraduate degree with a preference toward a degree in ministry.

  • At least 2 years experience in youth ministry.

  • A heart for reaching students where they are.

  • Experience recruiting, training, encouraging, and inspiring volunteers.

  • Ability to think “outside-the-box” to imagine new possibilities for youth ministry.
  •  Must fully embrace the vision and mission statement of Highlands Church.


  • Provide leadership to all youth programs at Highlands Church with compassion, energy, and creativity. These programs include, but are not limited to, midweek events for both middle

    school and high school students, small groups, camps, and special events.

  • Recruit, train, pray for, and involve youth ministry volunteers.

  • Regularly meet students on their “turf,” by visiting schools, games, performances, and other

    places students hang out.

  • Develop and implement strategies for reaching un-churched and de-churched students, and their


  • In partnership with the Pastor of Families and Missions, plan and lead an annual mission trip, and

    other service opportunities for students.

  • Establish regular and effective means of communication with students and their parents.

  • Maintain a high level of commitment to the families of students, recognizing that youth ministry

    is best seen as a partnering with parents.

  • Maintain strong, interpersonal relationships with youth, parents, and staff.

  • Oversee student ministry budget, keeping clear and accurate records with the utmost integrity.

    Plan, organize, and lead fundraisers as needed.

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings with the Highlands staff.
  • Attend ongoing Youth Ministry training and meetings when necessary.



  • Should always exhibit professionalism, demonstrated by: a well-groomed appearance,

    conscientious work ethic, and respectful behavior.

  • Be willing and able to work at a fast pace within a variety of settings and circumstances, with

    composure and flexibility.

  • Should be ever conscious of the need for confidentiality.

  • Should exercise discernment and wise judgment.

  • Should be a person who gives extreme attention to details with an eye for excellence.

  • Should be a self-starter, good at multi-tasking and prioritizing projects in a limited time frame.

  • Maintain personal spiritual development through Bible reading, prayer, and Christian community.

  • Maintain current certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Embrace and adapt to growth, change, innovation and creativity.
