High School Pastor Church & Role Profile
Lake Avenue Church in Pasadena, CA, is seeking applicants for the position of High School Pastor. This document is intended not as a job description, but as an overview of the church, the current high school ministry, and the unique candidate we're hoping
About the Church
Lake Avenue Church is a 120-year-old congregational church with a strong history of growth, vibrancy, and community engagement. Part of the Conservative Congregational Christian Conference, LAC is evangelical in theology, but values a diversity of thought
and spiritual expression.
In fact, "diversity" is something we value and love about ourselves. This value shows up in practice, as we have multiple worship services in various styles and a large variety of options for engagement. But our value of diversity is much deeper than worship
styles and programs: we are passionate about both reflecting and engaging our surrounding community, which is extremely diverse in ethnicity, socio-economics, beliefs, styles, and many more areas. Our dream is that Lake Avenue Church would be an expression
of the Kingdom of God that is contextualized for Pasadena and the surrounding neighborhoods in the San Gabriel Valley. Our dream is that we would be a place that honors diversity, but moves us all to a Kingdom of God unity.
Each year, our leadership prayerfully develops priorities that reflect the needs of the church and community, as well as God's leading (Click here:

We are sent ones, intergenerationally:
- Worshiping in unity
- Learning in community
- Progressing toward completion in Christ.
- Serving God's mission
Profile of the Role and Candidate
As one would expect, the High School Pastor is responsible for the oversight and development of ministry to high school students at LAC. But we truly believe that not just any high school youth worker— not even just any
experienced high school youth worker—would flourish in this role. Some aspects of this ministry are what one might expect from a church role focused on this age group, and particularly in a church of similar
size. Things like:
- The High School Pastor is part of a team, reporting to the Associate Pastor of Children and Student Ministries, and working alongside ministry leaders in Early Childhood, Children, Middle School, and College.
- The High School Pastor oversees two ministry associates, and a large team of volunteers.
- The High School Pastor functions as part of the pastoral team of the church.
However, there are many other areas where this role is unique to the values of this church and the current timing. It's fair to say that the High School Ministry at Lake Avenue is in a rebuilding phase, and there is significant opportunity for growth. We're
not asking someone to come and "return us to our former glory days," but we do seek visionary leadership committed to building a ministry that honors existing values while moving in new directions toward new vibrancy and health.
Despite the current challenges, the LAC High School Ministry has great strength in quality paid and volunteer youth workers, as well as a high value and engagement of students who serve in the High School Ministry and the larger church.
The parents of Lake Avenue high schoolers are hoping the ministry will encourage their teenagers toward spiritual growth and maturity, and they are particularly interested in the ministry partnering
with parents toward this goal, and in the High School Ministry being a place of belonging for their student.
Lake Avenue's church leadership desires that the high school ministry would effectively engage a widely diverse student population in spiritual growth, and that there would be an increase of
student engagement with the church at large (both while in high school, and after high school).
Lake Avenue high school students are looking for a passionate, engaging, fun, and challenging context in which to experience community, spiritual growth, and relational belonging.
The search team is looking for a candidate who is spiritually passionate, is experienced with and values diversity, is relational, is honest and vulnerable, leads well, deeply knows high schoolers, builds great volunteer teams,
and is fun. With our diverse student group, it is critical that our High School Pastor relates well to diverse groups ethnically, socio-economically, and in affinity.
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of professional youth ministry experience with experience partnering and communicating with parents, building volunteer teams, and leading in the larger church context (not just youth ministry).
If you or someone you know might be a great candidate, please send a cover letter and resume to LAC Lead Ministry Pastor, Jeff Mattesich at email@example.com.
