JOB TITLE: Director of Communications
DEPARTMENT: Communications Ministry
SUPERVISOR: Executive Pastor
FLSA STATUS: Nonexempt Lay / Full-time / Salary
WORK HOURS: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Communications is responsible for the creation and implementation of a strategic, multi-faceted communications program designed to build and strengthen First Presbyterian Church’s mission “to know Christ, to make Him known, and to exhibit His love through worship, education and service.” This program will target appropriate constituencies both inside and outside the FPC community using both digital (e.g. website, email, social media) and print (e.g. bulletin, newsletter, fliers, posters) media. The Director will engage other staff and volunteers in the Communications Ministry

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develops good working relationships with FPC staff and lay leaders maintaining a clear understanding of the church’s evolving communications needs.
• Serves as staff liaison to the Communications Committee in developing a comprehensive and sustainable communications plan that considers the messages, the diverse means, and the various intended audiences.
• Collaborates with church leadership to develop and manage the First Presbyterian Church brand to insure clear and consistent messaging.
• Takes responsibility for creating and/or approving all internal and external communications including bulletins, newsletters, advertising, devotionals, campaign material, mass emails, directories, video, audio, posters, brochures, banners, and press releases.
• Insures a high level of quality, consistency and timeliness in all internal and external communications.
• Oversees, maintains and upgrades the design and content of the church website.
• Produces weekly bulletins and biweekly First Edition with assistance of other staff.
• Leads a monthly Communications Meeting with program staff to plan, facilitate and carry out communication needs of the church.
• Reviews regularly the mission, program and activities of FPC to insure that the activities of the church receive effective and professional publicity.
• Attends weekly staff meeting and monthly program staff meeting to maintain awareness of communication needs.
• Insures the practice of good stewardship of resources, including preparing and tracking budgets for the Communications Ministry.
• Generates news and feature articles via original copywriting or by coordination with other FPC staff or lay leaders.
• Maintains the dignity, appeal and look of FPC’s image.
• Uses good judgment appropriate to the situation, constantly evaluating priorities.
• Sets and communicates deadlines to church staff and congregation.
• Generates innovative ideas for promoting church ministries.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Supervises work of communications assistant/graphic designer and the Hospitality Center Coordinator.
• Supervises work of videographer and other part-time employees and contract workers.

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS:

• Correct English grammar, spelling, sentence structure and punctuation.
• Knowledge of PC and Mac based systems, and is an advanced user in Microsoft Word, Photoshop, Quark, Illustrator, iMovie, and Final Cut, as well as familiarity with WordPress and MailChimp.
• Basics of production schedules and offset printing.
• Basic operation of audio visual equipment.
• Knowledge of Presbyterian polity, church administration, structure, policies and procedures.
• Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and gracefully with many interruptions.
• Discipline and organizational ability to work within and adhere to strict, overlapping deadlines.
• Attention to detail and accuracy in dates, names, locations and descriptions.
• Strong written and oral communication skills.
• Strong managerial, organizational and leadership skills.
• Proven creative and design skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and diverse teams of people to meet deadlines.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION:

B.A. in Communications, English, Journalism, Public Relations, or Marketing is preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

Two years of working in a managerial capacity. Familiarity with congregational culture and life.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee primarily works indoors in an open area office setting. The noise level in the work environment is often noisy with frequent interruptions and loud conversations, which affect one’s ability to focus on computer work, hear phone conversations and concentrate on work at the desk.
