The Town of Nappanee, IN

Nappanee, Indiana is a small, rural town of nearly 7000 people.  The average person in Nappanee has family that has resided in the area for multiple generations.   Amish Acres (a renowned tourist destination) draws outside attraction to Nappanee by highlighting the lifestyle of the Amish, since there are a large contingency that live in Elkhart County.  A deep rooted Amish/Mennonite heritage has a major influence on the commerce, social, and religious DNA of the community.  The people are friendly and kind.   More than 70% would claim to have a home church, even so, there are many who have a form of religion, but “deny the power that could make them godly” (2 Tim 3:5).

Though the people that reside in and around Nappanee make up just over 50% of the church, the ministry impact reaches well beyond the town, reaching out to people in a 30-45 minute radius.  This radius would include the cities/towns of:  South Bend, Mishawaka, Elkhart, Goshen, Syracuse, Warsaw, Bremen, Plymouth, and other smaller communities.

The Church of Nappanee Missionary

The Nappanee Missionary Church began its ministry in the late 1870s under the influence of Daniel Brenneman, a local minister who had experienced the moving of God's Spirit. For nearly 100 years the church was located in the center of Nappanee, IN.  In the mid '70s God began to do a special work in the life of this fellowship, and a decision was made to relocate from the original downtown location.

In 1979, Dave Engbrecht (current senior pastor) became the church's pastor, and a few months later ground was purchased to begin the church's relocation.  In July of 1981, the congregation moved to its current location, just north of Nappanee on State Road 19.  This allowed NMC to be more accessible to the cities surrounding, growing the overall ministry potential.  Since that time, there have been numerous additions to the building with space to allow quality age appropriate programming to take place.

Nearly two decades of significant growth happened between 1985 and 2005, increasing average attendance from 300 to nearly 3,000.  It was an era of multiple building programs, multiple staff additions, and the development of multiple ministry programs.  In 2003, NMC launched an on-site video venue service referred to as Connection (which now has services at 9:15 am and 10:45 am on Sunday mornings).    In 2005, NMC began a regional video venue ministry in LaGrange County in Indiana with the start of New Life Fellowship (that has grown to nearly 400).  There are other strategic regional and global partnerships that NMC in which NMC is involved.

NMC is now a church of 3000+, marked by a passion "to make fully committed disciples." During this period of time God has allowed us to equip many men and women for full time vocational Christian ministry. Throughout the years NMC has always believed that "OUR GREATEST DAYS ARE JUST AHEAD!"

The History of Kid Ministry @ NMC

Children’s Ministry (or Kid Min) at NMC has been a major priority.  Nicely and creatively constructed ministry space has been designated to disciple kids and their families.  The Kid Min department includes:  (a) Nursery/Toddlers; (b) Preschool/Pre-K; (c) Kindergarten through Third Grade; and (e) Fourth/Fifth Grade.  The curriculum and methods employed are designed to match a child’s maturation and development.  Though the majority of discipling efforts are targeted at the child, there is strategic intent at each child’s age level for NMC to come alongside the parent with the hope of making them the spiritual hero by resourcing/equipping them to create spiritual wins at home.

The current Kid Min team consists of four full time staff, one part time ministry staff person, and four part-time administrative support staff.
