The Position

The central contribution of the Controller is to advance the ministry of Christ’s kingdom by effectively managing as a servant leader, the vital ministry of financial management.  In accomplishment of this objective, the Controller will conform to biblical standards in relating to members of the church family, members of the congregation, staff members, sister churches, community leaders and other organizations. 

 

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Teamwork

  • Collaborate with the Shared Resources Team Leader in giving direction to the implementation of ministry vision through financial management
  • Assist each staff member in the formulation, development, and implementation of their annual ministry goals
  • Hold regular meetings with those reporting to this position for the purpose of planning, coordinating, problem-solving, decision-making, and performance evaluation

 

Internal Reporting and Communication

  • Regularly provide the Central Leadership Team and Session Board with written reports that accurately reflect the status of all key ministry areas against established budget and ministry objectives
  • Meet regularly with the staff and lay leadership for each Ministry Department to assure that financial matters are being managed in a manner that will lead to the achievement of the established ministry objectives

 

External Reporting

  • Coordinate with staff and the contracted outside accounting firm for the completion of an annual audit of the MPPC Financial records, including preparation of required schedules and tax compliance work
  • Have prepared a MPPC Annual Report, at the conclusion of the church fiscal year

 

Planning and Budgeting

  • Be responsible for the development of an annual budget, and for presentation of an annual budget to Session
  • Assist individual departments in developing annual budgets that achieve their ministry goals
  • Develop and utilize forward-looking, predictive models and activity-based financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and business plans

 

 

Stewardship

  • The implementation of a stewardship, fund-raising, and deferred-giving program and donor receipting system which includes the building of major donor files and relationships;
  • Monitor giving (including cash and non-cash gifts), supervise the donor receipting process, and answer related inquiries from Congregational members
  • Report weekly general fund giving results to the Central Leadership team and Session Board
  • Oversee and provide consultation to the major gift programs, including capital campaigns and giving to Church of the Pioneers Foundation
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with donors

 

Financial Operations

  • Manage all financial and accounting systems and controls
  • Manage relationships with banks and investment account managers
  • Implement and manage financial controls and monitoring systems, including review of checking activity weekly and approval of all capital expenditures and of all payment requests greater than $10,000
  • Coordinate in tandem with the Director of Human Resources, all areas of employee benefits as they relate to wages/salary, employee retirement accounts, group health insurance (medical, dental, optical), life insurance, vacations, and time off
  • Encourage the development of non-paid staff and operational committees in accomplish the work of the division
  • Direct legal, insurance and risk management
  • Remain up to date on nonprofit audit best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations
  • Oversee cash flow planning and ensure availability of funds as needed
  • Oversee cash, investment, and asset management

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

The Controller will be a seasoned and mature leader with at least 10 years of broad finance experience, including audit, gathering and evaluating financial information and making actionable recommendations to senior leadership. The candidate will ideally have experience managing finance (accounting, budgeting, control, and reporting) for a nonprofit organization.

 

The Controller will have the following experience and attributes:

  • A minimum of a BS, CPA preferred
  • At least ten years of experience as a CFO, controller, or equivalent, preferably in a nonprofit organization with an overall budget of at least $5 million
  • Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of creative financial management strategies
  • Ability to create management reporting tools that assist departmental and site leaders to effectively direct the financial aspects of their responsibilities
  • Significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, including:
  • fund accounting
  • FASB compliance
  • GAAP/GAAS reporting
  • Experience working with information technology staff to manage finance and accounting software packages
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills
  • Practices a high level of financial, personal, and professional integrity
