Director of Contemporary Music and Worship

The purpose of this position is to provide vision and musical leadership for the contemporary worship services of FPC as a worship architect and musical theologian who serves as one of the lead worshippers for our churchThe person serves as a collaborative team member in helping to plan and lead worship at the church, under the general direction of the Senior Pastor and in collaboration with other pastors and members of the Worship and Music Department.  This staff person will also serve as a resource to the other ministries of FPC as requested and assigned.



This position reports to the Senior Pastor, and supervises the Technical Director for Worship


Essential Traits:

  • Is a Christ-centered person, who holds a high view of and strong commitment to Scripture as the Word of God
  • Has at least 3 years’ experience as a worship leader, possessing excellent skill as a musician and singer, with an understanding of music theory and vocal arranging. Has the ability to move comfortably between different styles of music, and is an enthusiastic supporter of both traditional and contemporary expressions of worship
  • Possesses a shepherd’s heart, as well as excellent team-building, leadership, and discipleship skills. Also has a teachable heart, and is a servant leader and team player
  • Has an understanding of and a commitment to current theological discussions regarding ancient/future worship
  • Possesses an understanding of and appreciation for Presbyterian polity (church government) and Reformed theology, especially as expressed in ECO: A Covenant Order of Presbyterians
  • Has a deep appreciation for and commitment to the work of the larger church beyond ministry of music and worship, as well as a desire to be involved in the life of the church community
  • Has a working knowledge of Planning Center and ProPresenter, as well as other computer software used in producing contemporary worship services


Worship Arts Ministry

  • Works in collaboration with the Senior Pastor, the Director of Traditional Music and Worship, and other members of the Worship Planning team to plan all regular, seasonal, and special event worship services
  • Recruits, schedules, manages, coaches, and provides spiritual direction to the worship team musicians and singers, and the Technical Director for Worship. Fosters spiritual growth and community with these team members, and provides spiritual direction beyond music
  • Prepares and presents special music as anthems and offertories; provides direction to the visual elements of the sanctuary and worship center spaces; and serves as a resource for and developer of videos for periodic use in worship services
  • Expands the worship song repertoire of the congregation in a Biblically and theologically appropriate manner, incorporating styles and musicians/artists that reach groups other than just the current demographic of our congregation
  • Leads congregational singing in a humble and Christ-like manner, giving praise to God and drawing attention to Him instead of oneself or the worship team
  • Takes part in weekly debriefing sessions with staff to consider the prior week’s worship services and plan for the coming weeks


Worship and Music Committee of the Session

  • Attends scheduled meetings of the Worship and Music Committee and works to establish goals, objectives, and priorities for the committee
  • Collaborates with the Director of Traditional Music and Worship to help establish and manage the worship and music budget
  • Makes recommendations regarding the facility/worship space and layout/equipment needs

Youth Ministry 

  • Assists in development, coaching, and mentoring of worship teams in the youth and college ministries, and is an active participant in leadership as needed and available. Provides musical support for the youth and college ministries at special events, retreats, and summer camps, as available. 

FPC Staff

  • Attends all staff meetings and retreats in which Program Staff are expected to participate
  • Is a constructive and helpful support to other members of the staff, and works in collaboration to help better the ministry of the whole church, not just the music ministry
  • Serves as a team player committed to mutuality and accountability in the body of Christ
  • May devote up to 10 hours per week to providing leadership and support to another programmatic ministry of the church, which is commensurate with the candidate’s skills and passions in ministry (such as discipleship, small groups, community, pastoral care, etc.)
  • Other duties as may be assigned that are consistent with the rationale for this position
