Job Description

Grace United Methodist Church, Rochester, IN

Teaching, encouraging, and providing opportunities for understanding Scriptures, knowing God, and growing in the practice of personal faith in God are essential to the ministry of Rochester Grace UMC. Helping people of all ages and at all stages of faith development to seek to be renewed in their minds and to live transformed lives is a major ministry emphasis at Grace. Because “faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17), the Scriptures are the authority of our Christian education. The CED is the coordinator of this ministry at Grace. The following items are directly related to the position, but may not be inclusive of all that is required.

The Christian Education Director (CED) will:

  1. Answer to the Staff/Parish Committee.

  2. Call and lead meetings of the Christian Education (CE) team at least quarterly.

  3. Develop and/or recommend curricula for the nursery, preschool, elementary, middle school, and high school classes as needed.

  4. Recruit, instruct, coordinate, and supervise volunteers, including teachers, craft leaders, music leaders, and others as needed.

  5. Arrange for substitute teachers, leaders, assistants, as needed.

  6. Supervise nursery coordinator and volunteers.

  7. Purchase materials including craft supplies, curriculum, snacks, etc.

  8. Collect, count, and turn in children’s Sunday school offerings to the church office.

  9. Purchase and present Bibles to upper elementary Sunday school children.

  10. participate in Community Vacation Bible School (VBS) leadership team or provide leadership for Grace VBS.

  11. Develop and coordinate other children’s events (with Grace preschool, with Evangelism team, Sunday school kick off-event, etc.)

  12. Provide support and curricular options to adult Sunday school teachers as needed.

  13. Provide support and curricular options for other adult studies, such as Advent, Lenten, Disciple, small groups, etc. as needed.

  14. Promote all Christian Education (CE) opportunities to the congregation.

  15. Attend Administrative Council meetings and supply written reports when needed.

  16. Develop proposed budget for Christian Education and present to Finance Committee. Coordinate CE participation in annual finance campaign promotion.

Our expectation is that this individual would have a personal growing relationship with Jesus Christ, be consistent in worship in his/her home church or Grace UMC. We encourage the CED to be consistent in spending time daily with the Lord in His Word and in prayer, and to daily seek God’s direction in order to lead this essential ministry.
