CONTEXT
Urban Village Church (UVC) is a four-year-old multi-site church serving four neighborhoods in Chicago, with a current weekly attendance of around 400 adults. Our core values are bold (rooted in the Gospel of Jesus Christ), inclusive (welcoming diverse people from across the spectrum of identity), and relevant (practicing Christianity as a way of life). Believer or doubter, gay or straight, Republican or Democrat – all people are welcome here. Rooted in the United Methodist tradition, we are a church that seeks to welcome people from many traditions (including “nones”). Committed to continued growth through church planting and the Jesus way of discipleship, we are at once evangelical (in the fullest sense of the word) and inclusive. MINISTRY SUMMARY

The Director of Discipleship is a strategic, dynamic, and relational leader who will develop, interpret, and resource our growing discipleship pathway, with primary responsibility for the three major ministry areas of the pathway:

  • Small groups strategy, organization, connections, oversight, and expansion. We envision our current number of lay-led groups (30) doubling or tripling over the next 2-4 years.
  • Leadership development. Seeing, inviting, equipping, sending, and coaching leaders to launch and lead groups, and to apprentice and multiply new leaders. Because of our multi-site context and the reality that the Director will be at a different site every Sunday, this position requires high-level organizational, coaching, and delegation skills.
  • One-on-one mentoring ministry. While groups are crucial, we envision developing the discipleship pathway to include ongoing one-on-one relationships for learning/formation (particularly at the beginning of the Christian journey) and mutual accountability and growth (as one continues the journey and deepens in faith and commitment).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Architect, implement, and communicate a clear, spiritual growth-oriented discipleship pathway/process across a diverse multi-site church, including new-to-church/faith classes, long-term and short-term small groups, and one-on-one discipling systems
  • Develop a strategy for birthing and multiplying groups, including connection of new people to groups, coaching plans, apprenticing plans, and curriculum standardization where appropriate
  • Track appropriate metrics to monitor effectiveness of discipleship initiatives and identify areas of opportunity
  • Oversee general group functions including troubleshooting, information management and analysis of group and individual trends
  • Develop and revise curriculum for small groups; organize curriculum database and materials
  • Recruit, train, send, and continue to equip small group coaches, facilitators, and hosts
  • Plan and facilitate regular group training sessions for leaders, hosts, and coaches
  • Analyze best practices for maximizing outreach/evangelism/invitation events to communities for groups
  • Recruit, train, and coach individuals to serve as discipleship leaders/liaisons for each site
  • Communicate with sites to ensure that the site has needed materials and pertinent information
  • Oversee responses via email and phone to individuals’ questions, needs for information, and ministry sign-ups

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, small groups staff meetings, and meetings with lay leaders on the church strategy team
  • Preach from time to time, when invited to do so
  • Network in Chicago and with other congregations to develop and share a mutual resource base of small-group expertise

CORE COMPETENCIES

  • Be a bold, inclusive, relevant follower of Jesus Christ
  • Exemplify the church’s values and uphold the policies in the employee handbook
  • Commitment to a “church without walls” (radically inclusive, anti-racist, anti-oppression)
  • Passion for building community with diverse people at different places on the Christian journey
  • High-level capacity for long-term strategic thinking, organization, and a track record for effectively structuring, communicating and transforming conceptual ideas into action and execution
  • High level of initiative, motivation and enthusiasm
  • Capable of maintaining confidences, effectively listening, and resolving conflicts
  • Able to identify, recruit and coach discipleship leaders and delegate tasks effectively
  • Able to speak and listen clearly and helpfully, to help individuals discern next steps for their personal discipleship journeys while working comfortably and effectively with people who range from very experienced in Christian faith to brand new to Christian faith
  • Able to initiate and manage multiple projects simultaneously in dynamic environment
  • Able to work well both independently and in teams

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent
  • Open to lay and clergy applicants
  • 2-3 years’ ministry experience in a large-congregation or church-plant context with small groups
  • Demonstrated leadership and small-group facilitation skills

TO APPLY

  • Confidential applications should be sent directly to info@urbanvillagechurch.org; please do not mail hard copies.
  • Candidates must submit a letter of interest including a short statement of faith and a personal vision for discipleship ministries; a résumé or CV; and a list of references.l
  • Screening of applications will begin immediately and continue until a Director of Discipleship is found, with an anticipated announcement in mid-summer and assumption of ministry responsibilities during the late summer/early fall of 2014.
