Job Summary


The Director of Adult Ministries will lead, manage, and nurture the adult Growing and Serving ministries pathways, and supervise all age-targeted and specialty ministry areas in a professional, efficient manner that honors God. This person will work under the direction of the Managing Executive Director to help implement the vision of SJUMC.


Required Functions

  • Lead the adult growing ministries
  • Lead and develop all Growing (Intentional Discipleship) ministries at St. James, directly in adult ministries and indirectly through other staff persons in children, youth, and special needs in order to help persons get involved in small groups and classes
  • Manage the adult discipleship pathway from the new members’ class to participation in intentionally discipling groups (Sunday School classes, small groups, Oasis classes, etc.)
  • Lead the ADULT SERVING Ministries
  • Lead and develop all Serving (Risk-Taking Mission and Service) ministries at St. James, managing the serving pathway in order to help persons get involved in ministry teams inside and outside the church
  • Promote ACTS model of servant-ministry (Attracting / Connecting  / Training / Sustaining) among staff members and ministry leaders
  • Assist staff members in recruiting and equipping volunteers
  • Managing and coordinating all missions teams and involvement
  • Oversee the creation of new Growing and Serving ministries, identifying staff and/or volunteer leaders and establishing ministry teams to lead new ministries
  • Ensure that the church’s Growing and Serving ministries are aligned with the church’s vision, and that ministry resources (human and financial) are aligned towards fulfilling the vision
  • Supervise all age-targeted and specialty ministries
  • Implement the congregation’s vision for ministry through leading and managing the directing-level staff persons for children’s ministries, youth ministries, special needs ministries, and pastoral care
  • Provide oversight for preschool director as it relates to integrating preschool ministries with our overall church ministries
  • Ensure vision alignment between these program ministry areas: adult, youth, children, special needs, and pastoral care
  • Promote a staff culture that promotes teamwork and synergy across all ministry areas at SJUMC, working towards vision alignment in Connecting, Worshiping, Growing, Serving, and Giving.

 Other Responsibilities

  • Ensure all ministries, systems, and operations comply with biblical principles, best practices, church policies, ministry priorities, and civil laws
  • Perform all other duties assigned by the Senior Pastor or Managing Executive Director

 Minimum Qualifications

  •  Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university required, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Previous ministry leadership experience required
  • Experience in successfully leading and managing people and teams, including planning, team-building, developing and maintaining budgets, creating and managing plans
  • Leadership and management skills appropriate for a directing level position required
  • Computer literate, with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office software
  • Strong commitment to the Christian faith and to the theology of the United Methodist Church; familiarity with the United Methodist Church structure, mission opportunities, and resources is helpful
  • Willing to adhere to the St. James UMC Staff Policies and Statement of Ethics and to be loyal to the Senior Pastor, the SMT, and to St. James UMC Playbook (church vision, values and mission; employee handbook and covenant)
