Job Description:

Christ Community Church is a non-denominational church in the western suburbs of Chicago. 

We are seeking a servant leader who will be responsible for providing direct oversight of all ministry functions and staff related to Accounting & Bookstore operations, Financial Freedom and Budgeting for our multi-site church, which currently averages 5,000 attendees per weekend. 




  • Develops planning and budgeting systems to oversee preparation of the annual budget; prepares materials and communications in support of the annual operating budget/planning cycle; meets with the Management Team to review budget plans prior to the consolidation of the budget for review with the Trustee Team and Administration Pastor
  • Serves as a member of the Count Team and acts as Service Supervisor at the SC Campus
  • Maintains Accounting, Financial and Investment systems to ensure appropriate use of financial resources
  • Oversees and ensures timely and accurate month-end closing procedures and results
  • Performs complex accounting projects requiring research and analysis; resolves complex accounting problems including issues with funds transfers
  • Responsible for cash flow management; oversees administration of all non-cash gifts
  • Reviews accounts payables and receivables to ensure appropriate management and allocation of church funds
  • Provides counsel on selection of loans, insurance policies/carriers, lease agreements; oversees on-going banking and broker relationships
  • Updates accounting files and maintains integrity of church financial software
  • Oversees annual audit; responds to inquiries and ensures that information requests are met and that issues are resolved to their satisfaction in a timely manner
  • Acts as compliance officer with regard to issues impacting financial activities; ensures that policies and procedures are stated and in compliance with commonly accepted accounting standards, state/federal guidelines and approved trustee/elder/auditor recommendations
  • Supports finance processes related to extension campus development


  • Analyzes and interprets results of financial statements and prepares monthly reports providing information useful in making management decisions with regards to assets and cash management activities; meets with staff to discuss budget variances and/or future expenses that will impact cash management 
  • Supervises and coordinates the maintenance of ledger accounts and related activities for the production of financial statements and reports
  • Reviews and ensures credibility of financial statements and reports such as balance sheets and statements of financial condition
  • Establishes workflow and operational procedures to ensure integrity of information and timeliness of report circulation
  • Acts as a liaison to other teams in an ongoing effort to maintain positive relationships that are developed from service-oriented responsiveness and high levels on confidence in the integrity of financial reports
  • Develops customized financial reports for the Management and Trustee teams and other leadership groups as needed


  • Provides top level/big-picture oversight of the Lifeline Bookstore and Financial Freedom teams/operations
  • Oversees ministry related community groups, counseling, conferences and seminars (i.e. Financial Peace University, Crown Ministries, Estate Planning)
  • Supports the Trustee team which may include responsibilities such as: scheduling/facilitating team meetings, minutes, communications, agenda preparation, reports and presentations


  • Resources and trains staff to effectively recruit and retain volunteer leaders
  • Develops and shepherds a key group of leaders for Financial Freedom ministry


  • Provides direct supervision over the following positions: Bookstore Manager, General Ledger Accountant, A/P Accountant, Payroll Accountant, Accounting Administrative Assistant & Finance Manager and Financial Freedom Administrator
  • Evaluates and manages the performance of each person on the team; provides leadership to the annual goal-setting process
  • Assists in the recruitment and on-boarding of new staff

The Controller agrees to take on additional responsibilities as directed by the supervisor and as necessary for the continued development of Christ Community Church. These responsibilities will most likely be added according to the gifts, passions and talents of the employee, designed to address the growing and changing needs of the ministry team and may be added at the initiative and discretion of the supervisor.


  • Serves under the leadership and direction of the Administration Pastor
  • Supervises and directs the work of the Bookstore Manager, Financial Freedom Administrator and accounting/bookstore staff
  • Serves as a member of the Finance team
  • Interacts frequently with Team Captains and Trustees
  • Helps recruit, schedule and supervise accounting volunteers in support roles
  • Submits to the Senior Pastor and Board of Elders of Christ Community Church

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting and/or Finance. CPA required; MBA desired
• 8+ years of relevant work experience, with 5-yrs non-profit, fund accounting preferred (ideally within a church environment)
• Proven experience with management and financial reporting
• Trust, gift annuity and investment accounting experience
• Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills
• Ability to dissect complicated financial information and prepare straightforward reports for senior leaders and board members
• Capacity to work in confidence with highly sensitive information
• Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word and A/P & database software applications
• Experience with recruiting, developing, and deploying volunteer teams
• Willingness to commit in membership to Christ Community Church within first 12 months of employment
• Ability to fulfill the physical, mental and emotional requirements of the position, and work within the necessary work environments, as listed in
the attached ADA task list, which is considered an addendum to this job description
• Willingness and ability to comply with and support all policies, procedures, standards and statements outlined in the Employee Handbook,
position papers and other governing documents created for Christ Community Church
