The Story of NMC Internships
Nappanee Missionary Church is a church of 3000+ that sits in a small rural town, 35 minutes southeast of South Bend in northern Indiana.  NMC has provided internships for over 30 years, allowing young adults to “taste” and “experience” vocational ministry. In May of 1997, NMC launched SOAR, a 12-week summer internship. Since the inception of the program, over 150 young adults have been invested in, sent out, and scattered through out the world, with their own personal goal of making fully committed disciples.  Amazing stories continue to flow in sharing the impact being made by their lives through the power of the Holy Spirit.

What former interns say about SOAR ...

What was the biggest lesson you learned from SOAR?

The biggest lesson I learned from SOAR was that I was never alone. God is ALWAYS there with me, and it was up to me to invite him into my busyness. –Shawna Vincent (SOAR, 2012)

SOAR gave me the experience, resources and contacts, as well as the confidence to continue going into ministry.  –Jessica Watts (SOAR, 2010)

I learned that God works through the little things. He can and does work through the programming and big events, but I saw God move when least expected. Just a great reminder that we do serve a God that is way bigger than ourselves. –Tyler Suplee (SOAR, 2013)

My SOAR experience was incredible, from the hands on practical experience you get working in a church with great staff, to the time spent alone with God, there were a plethora of lessons learned. However, the greatest lesson I learned from SOAR was what it meant to truly be a worshipper of God and foster my spiritual life. You can get church experience at so many other internships, but what separates SOAR is the emphasis placed on growing you as a Follower of Christ. –Colin Urbanick (SOAR, 2011)

How does SOAR continue to impact your life today?

I still apply many of the lessons I learned from SOAR to this day.  Including how to “do ministry,” leadership, speaking, and much more.  More so, the lessons in listening to God’s voice and defining trajectories for all that I do are derived from my time spent in SOAR.  I do not see an end to the value SOAR has had in my life. –Ryan Graham (SOAR, 2011)

Coming out of SOAR, I realized that my then-current way of handling conflict was not Biblical; what followed was a tough season of repairing those skills so that they’d be in line with the Word. That season came to fruition when I stepped into a higher leadership role at my job. Without those skills being honed during SOAR I’d be less effective as a leader and as a role model. –Deandra Borkholder (SOAR, 2010)

SOAR created in me a deep desire to have a more intimate relationship with Christ that constantly pushes for more depth, a true hunger.  That summer provided a confidence in me for ministry, not in myself, but a confidence in the Spirit.  SOAR was an affirming, empowering, and unforgettable experience in my personal journey with Christ and ministry. –Tim Veenstra (SOAR, 2011)

My SOAR experience laid a solid foundation for me both personally in my walk with Christ and professionally in ministry that my last 15+ years in ministry has been able to build on.  I regularly look back on my journal I kept during that time, and I see specific moments where God clarified my life calling, which He continues to unfold today. –Derry Prenkert (SOAR, 1997)
