Ward Church

Director of Contemporary Worship

Ward Church
Northville, Michigan, United States

Denominations: Presbyterian
Church Size: 1501 to 2000
Job Type: Part-Time

Job Description:

Ward Church is looking for an individual, part-time at 25hrs/week that is skilled in creating an inspiring sacred space for worship in our contemporary worship service.  This person is not only skilled musically, but has a keen ability to capture and present all forms of art in settings that God could use to capture the hearts of His people.

Our Contemporary worship service at Ward is new.  For years, Ward Church has been known around town for an amazing Traditional/Classical worship service.  We still are!  Ward has made attempts in the past at CCM-type Contemporary Christian worship services, but they never stuck.  We wanted to do a better job at reaching our 5-mile radius for Jesus and we realize that most of those people will be most likely to attend this service.  So, we created a service that relates more to mainstream pop culture.  Currently, about half of our congregation attends this worship service and loves it.

We have designed this service to reflect more CCM mainstream artistic efforts, but we also appreciate the eclectic nature of today’s mainstream culture, as well.  We still do hymns (with a band) and have a Praise Choir and an Orchestra one time a month in addition to our rotating bands.  Our congregation has really appreciated that kind of music experience in worshiping God.  This individual does not necessarily have to have classical music gifts in directing a choir or leading an orchestra, but should really be more of a worship leader, ministry leader, worship planner, rehearsal leader and people person.

A little more about Ward Church…  ...Ward is a Presbyterian church and is part of the EPC (Evangelical Presbyterian Church) denomination.  Ward currently averages around 3,000 in attendance every week.  Ward has 4 different worship venues with Liturgical, Traditional, Contemporary and Post-Contemporary.  So there is something for everyone from 1-92.  We are a suburban Detroit community (about 30min from Detroit) made up of a lot of autoworkers (blue and white collar) and Northville is a beautiful all-American suburban community.  Downtown Northville is a stone’s throw from the church and is a very historical looking downtown spot, too.  We are also currently hiring for a Director of Post-Contemporary Worship, so if there is interest on your part, or you know somebody, please point them our way or onto this site where you’re reading this!

This person must be a people person and more concerned with the things of God and people than getting the job done.  We, who are involved in music ministry, have to produce a product each week to help people experience God.  Too many times leaders can get caught up in producing that product and running over people in the process along the way.  We want to see and know your heart.  Consider providing examples of how important relationships are to you.  We also want to see video and hear some audio of you.  Seeing you lead worship and hearing your musicianship is a key part of this process, as well.

We also realize that with a part-time job, you may need to also have an additional job to help make a full-time income.  We are flexible and can work around schedules, yet we do have some days of the week we need you here due to ministry needs.

We would love to hear from you if feel led to investigate this opportunity for ministry employment further.  If you are interested, please send your resume, references and video/audio links to Billy Petty, Director of Worship at  We are praying for your search.  God has the right place for you to serve Him whether it is here at Ward or not.  This life goes quickly and God is looking for willing people to serve Him and help make Him known.  Hang in there, keep praying and keep looking!
